Councilman Smith announces candidacy for 67th State Assembly District

Canyon Lake Councilman Jeremy Smith announced his candidacy for the 67th State Assembly District, a seat held by Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez since 2012.

On Nov. 5, Assemblywoman Melendez announced her candidacy for the 28th State Senate District in a 2020 special election. Senator Jeff Stone, who was elected to represent the 28th State Senate District in 2014 and re-elected in 2018, vacated the seat on Nov. 1 to accept an appointment as Director of the Western Region of the United States Department of Labor. He will be responsible for overseeing workplace safety, wage laws, and employment data-gathering in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington state.

Councilman Smith said he is running for State Assembly because he is tired of watching his friends and neighbors move out of California because it’s unaffordable.

“Sacramento has failed us. High taxes, crime, homelessness and traffic plagues Riverside County and the rest of our once-great state,” said Councilman Smith.

“As your next assemblyman, I will fight to restore the middle class and bring economic prosperity to Riverside County. We need to focus on cutting burdensome regulations and taxes that drive businesses and jobs out of California, end Sacramento mandates that take away local control and give public safety the resources they need to keep our neighborhoods, parks and schools safe.”

Councilman Smith has the support of the Canyon Lake City Council, as well as several other local endorsements that include Menifee Mayor Bill Zimmerman, Lake Elsinore Councilman Bob Magee, Wildomar Councilwoman Bridgett Moore and Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District Directors Darcy Burke and Phil Williams, to name a few.

“Councilman Jeremy Smith is a trusted leader on the Canyon Lake City Council,” said Canyon Lake Mayor Jordan Ehrenkranz. “Jeremy serves our community with passion, energy and vision. He stands by his principles and I know Jeremy will fight for the residents of Canyon Lake and Riverside County. I am honored to endorse Jeremy Smith for State Assembly.”

“Councilman Jeremy Smith is a regional leader who cares deeply about improving the lives of Riverside County residents,” said Menifee Mayor Bill Zimmerman. “I’m proud to endorse Jeremy Smith for State Assembly because he will be a strong advocate for Menifee and the people of Riverside County in Sacramento.”

Councilman Smith was elected to the Canyon Lake City Council in 2018. He is credited with initiating the first-ever joint meeting of the City Council and Canyon Lake Property Owners Association and championing technological improvements to enhance transparency and accountability at City Hall. He currently serves on the Riverside Transit Authority, Western Riverside County Regional Conservation Authority and the League of California Cities.

Councilman Smith is a business owner who was born and raised in Riverside County where he attended public schools. He graduated from Vanguard University with a bachelor’s degree in communications and went on to earn a master’s degree in public administration from California Baptist University in Riverside.

Councilman Smith and his wife Elissa reside in Canyon Lake with their two daughters, Kennedy and Raegan. His father, Larry Smith, is a member of the Calimesa City Council.

California’s 67th State Assembly District, one of 80 California State Assembly districts, encompasses the southern Inland Empire in western Riverside County.
