Canyon Lake veterans presented with quilt, Afghan

For the past five years, the Canyon Lake Quilters held a Quilts of Valor quilt raffle at the city’s Veterans Day Celebration. The free raffle is open to all Canyon Lake Veterans. This year’s winner is veteran Jim Lange, a radar operator enlisted in the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1968. Jim was stationed on a destroyer that made two tours to Vietnam.

“I was very honored and humbled to receive the quilt,” said Jim.

In addition to the quilt, 97-year-old Lavern Cann crocheted a patriotic Afghan and donated it to the raffle. The winner is U.S. Army veteran Barry Ward. Barry was a field artillery officer in the 2nd Armored Division. He was enlisted from 1975 to 1978 and stationed at Fort Hood in Texas. Barry said, “I’m humbled to receive such a gorgeous gift.”

The Canyon Lake Quilters is a group of approximately 20 women who meet periodically on Wednesdays at the senior center. The group is organized by Kathy Barbay. In addition to donating a quilt for the Veterans Day Celebration, the group makes three to five quilts annually for Canyon Lake veterans.
