Community gathers to celebrate veterans

The community gathered in the Towne Center on Monday for the 11th annual Veterans Day Celebration. The celebration was hosted by the city and the Canyon Lake Veterans Day Committee. The event kicked off at 10 a.m. with a flyover by the Warbirds West planes.

Veterans Day Committee Chair Vicki Warren served as master of ceremonies. The Elsinore High School Flying Tigers Jr. ROTC under the direction of Major Charles Ruhl raised the flag, posted the colors and performed a rifle and saber exhibition.

The Canyon Lake Choraleers performed patriotic songs and Mike Shroyer of Good Time Entertainment provided the patriotic music. Tress Maksimuk of Dark Isle Bagpipes performed “Taps.”

One rose for each Canyon Lake veteran who passed away this year along with a rose for the unknown veterans were placed in the urn next to the Veterans Monument. A floral wreath was also placed at the monument and will remain there for one week.

Resident Chuck Casey recited the poem “Old Glory” and Veterans Day Committee member Jill Batinich spoke about patriotism.
