Neighbors gather for 21st annual Chili Cook-Off

Approximately 80 Canyon Lake neighbors and their guests gathered in the cul-de-sac on Chaparral Way for the 21st annual Chili Cook-Off. This private event is held annually for current and former residents of Chaparral Way.

Canyon Laker Todd Stover started this annual block party shortly after moving to Canyon Lake in 1995 as a way for his neighbors to come together and get to know each other better.

“Many friendships have been formed among the families here,” said Todd. “We believe it has helped make our street a desirable place to live and it’s a great way to get to know your neighbors.”

Old neighbors and their friends continue to come back for the Chili Cook-off. “We’ve had people come from as far away as Germany and Norway for our contest,” said Todd. “This year, Tony Elder drove in from Colorado.”

There are no fees or forms to fill out to enter the contest. “We keep the rules simple,” says organizer Todd Stover. “Just show up with your chili in a crock-pot and you’re entered. The easier we keep it, the more people make chili.”

There were 19 entrants in this year’s contest competing for the Cook’s Choice and People’s Choice awards. Smoked tri-tip chili and bison chili were among the crowd favorites this year.

The People’s Choice winners are determined by the votes of those attending the event. Lori Blanchard won first place, Tom Tistinic took second and Gavin Johnsen came in third place.

The Cook’s Choice winners are determined by the votes of those who entered the contest. Jeff Bast took first place, Steven Rigg came in second place and Justin Stover won third place.

The first place winners were presented with a perpetual trophy and a tamale steamer. The second place winners were awarded a stovetop/over smoker and the third place winners won a jalapeno grill rack. Nicole San Nicolas was presented with a cupcake carrier in appreciation for bringing her custom cupcakes each year.

Todd would like to thank all those who attended and participated in the contest, especially Sandy and Lance Lillie, Wendy and Ken Signorio and Sherry and Jaw Stewart, who all contribute to making the event a success each year.

“It’s the spirit of helping and participating that keeps this event alive year after year,” said Todd.
