City Council to appoint new councilmember Oct. 7

Former Mayor Larry Greene resigned from his position as mayor and a member of the Canyon Lake City Council on Aug. 20 due to his wife’s declining health. In response to his resignation, Greene stated, “I am her caregiver and responsible for her welfare and well-being. At this time, her condition is unstable to the point that I cannot continue in my capacity with the City of Canyon Lake. It has been my pleasure, honor and privilege to be a part of the Canyon Lake City Council, and to serve in the position of mayor.”

Greene’s vacant seat on the City Council will be filled by appointment. The appointed individual will serve the remainder of the vacant term, ending in December 2020.

Residents interested in applying for the vacant seat were provided an opportunity to submit an application packet on or before Sept. 26. As of Sept. 24, the following individuals picked up and/or turned in application packets: Maryann Briseno, Brian Bock, Danielle Coats, Shari DiMond, Larry Greene and Brian Wood. On Tuesday, The Friday Flyer was informed that due to Greene’s intent to return to the City Council, Maryann Briseno, Brian Bock, Danielle Coats and Brian Wood have all withdrawn their applications.

Mayor Jordan Ehrenkranz has appointed an Ad Hoc Committee consisting of Mayor Pro Tem Kasey Castillo and Councilman Jeremy Smith to review the applications and to move the most qualified applicants forward in the process. The chosen applicants will be invited to interview in front of the City Council at a special meeting on Monday, Oct. 7. The meeting will be open to the public.

It is anticipated that the City Council will vote to make the appointment immediately following interviews on Oct. 7. A majority vote of the remaining council members (3 out of 4) will be required in order for an appointment to be made. The chosen applicant will be sworn-in and seated on the Council that same evening.
