Reel in the fun at CL Kids Fishing Derby

Hundreds of kids ages five to 15 will be fishing around the lake next Saturday, Sept. 7, hoping to catch the “big one” in the 33rd annual Kids Fishing Derby.

Sponsored by the Canyon Lake Bassmasters Club, the Kids Fishing Derby features trophies, prizes, raffle and a free lunch.

This free event kicks off with registration between 6 and 8 a.m. at Holiday Harbor Park. Parents must register and sign a consent form in order for their child to participate. Live worms will be handed out at registration while supplies last.

Kids can fish anywhere on the lake from the time they register until 11 a.m.

Fish weigh-in is from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Kids who are not in the weigh-in line by 12 p.m. are not eligible for trophies and prizes.

No more than three fish per species may be weighed in. Bass are excluded; all bass should be released back into the lake.

A complimentary hot dog lunch will be served at the snack bar at 12 p.m.

Awards will be presented at 1 p.m. Trophies are awarded for three different age groups: five to seven, eight to 11 and 12 to 15. A “Big Fish” trophy in each species will be awarded to one boy and one girl.

Each participant will receive one ticket for a separate prize drawing; every child will go home with a prize. A few lucky kids will go home with new bicycles.

The Canyon Lake Bassmasters Club is a non-profit organization. All donations are tax-deductible. Organizers are seeking sponsorship for this event. Individuals and businesses interested in sponsorship are asked to contact Jude Donahue at 909-215-5005.
