Retire flags no longer fit to serve nation

The 4th of July means a lot of things for Americans: a day off work, cookouts and fireworks when night falls. But at the heart of the holiday is the celebration of Independence Day and the American flag.

The United States Flag Code, Title 4, Section 8k states, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

Old, worn, frayed and faded flags are no longer fit to serve the nation and should be retired. Canyon Lakers who have such flags may drop them off in the flag retirement box located in front of Pack, Wrap and Post in the Towne Center.

The flag retirement box was made by Pack 346 Arrow of Light Scouts and unveiled at the 2017 Veterans Day Celebration.

The flags dropped off in the box are respectfully retired in a dignified way by the Cub Scouts.
