Letters: John Hermanns

Editor, The Friday Flyer

Sadly, with the passing of John Hermanns, the end of an era has come. John was a fixture on the Canyon Lake Golf Course for more than 20 years. Monday through Friday he could be found hitting the ball down the middle of the fairway and making putts.

John was one of the first people I met when Pei Pei and I moved to Canyon Lake. He invited me to play for “a dollar” and took it that day.

He introduced me to his best friend, Walt Popper, and we hit it off and became close friends. John, Walt and I played hundreds of rounds of golf together.

John had a ferociously competitive spirit but always in a friendly way. I witnessed him shooting his age many times when he was over 80. One of his favorite sayings about aging was, “Getting old ain’t for sissies.”

John, Walt and I played in the golf horse races several times. I believe we won the very first one we played in. John will be greatly missed. May he keep hitting them straight.

John’s wife Sara now lives at Atria should anyone wish to reach her.
