Letters: Flag Etiquette

Editor, The Friday Flyer

July 4th is coming soon and we all want to display our country’s flag. Regardless of political party, our flag symbolizes America, freedom, democracy, and our patriotism. It’s important that the flag is presented correctly. During a brief ride on the lake recently, I was amazed at how many people had the U.S. flag displayed backward.

There are a whole set of rules regarding the display of our country’s flag, but here are just a couple to keep in mind.

First, the union, or field of stars, must be to the top left as viewed by the public. This applies whether it’s horizontal or vertical. That means that if you hang it on your balcony it might appear to the right to you, but it needs to be to the top left to those viewing it while passing by.

Also if it’s displayed on clothing on the shoulder, the union should be pointed forward to the direction of travel. This would also include flags on the side of golf carts or cars. This means that the flag on the left side is in the normal position. The flag on the right side would be reversed so the union is facing forwards.

When flown at night, the flag should be illuminated. And finally, when the flag has served it’s time it should be properly disposed of. There’s a flag disposal box at the post office in the Towne Center provided by our local Scouts of Pack 346 just for this.

Have a great and safe patriotic 4th of July holiday everyone.
