9ers Golf Club awards $10,000 in scholarships

The Canyon Lake 9ers Golf Club presented $10,000 in students scholarships during its annual Progressive Dinner on June 1. Savannah Olszewski, Chase Cordon, Keeley Arendt and Ashley Warner are this year’s recipients.

Savannah was the team captain of her school’s junior varsity and varsity volleyball teams. Her cumulative GPA exceeded 3.8 and she also found time to perform 230 hours of community service. “What separates Savannah from other students is her motivation to succeed, her hard work and her positive attitude,” said Temescal Canyon High School Medical Careers Academy Director Melissa Fink.

Chase stands out as a CIF champion and team captain for Temescal Canyon High School’s water polo and swim teams. Along with his cumulative GPA of 3.55, Chase is an Eagle Scout. “Chase is not only a great teammate but he has a fierce work ethic and determination to make his entire team better,” said CHAWP Water Polo Club Director Greg Salvinski.

“Keeley is the perfect combination of being naturally smart and hard working,” said Kevin Quint, Temescal Canyon High School teacher. In addition to her academic excellence, Keeley has been in the ASB program and on the varsity tennis team for four years. As the captain of the tennis team, Keeley helped to lead the team to its CIF championship.

Ashley has achieved Honor Roll or higher status since entering high school. She has also been in the ASB program and on the varsity cheer team for all four years. For the past three years, the Temescal High School cheer team has been named the USA National Champions in their division and Ashley was a key contributor as well as co-captain.

“Ashley does everything with poise and is the epitome of what it means to be an excellent student-athlete,” said Kelsie McKenzie, Temescal Canyon High School teacher and varsity cheer coach.

“These graduates have established exceptional records of accomplishment and are very deserving of these scholarships,” said 9ers Golf Club President Sheryl Lewis. “The Canyon Lake 9ers wishes to thank all of those who contributed to this year’s scholarships. The Club looks forward to the outstanding girls and boys from Canyon Lake who will be applying next year for scholarships.”

The 9ers Golf Club scholarships are open to graduating seniors and continuing college students who reside in Canyon Lake and have demonstrated academic and athletic leadership during their high school years.

Students filled out an application and submitted an essay on “Lessons I have learned from Sports,” along with two letters of recommendation, transcripts verifying a GPA of 3.0 or higher and a letter of acceptance to the college or university they plan to attend or continue to attend.
