May is a busy month at Canyon Lake Library

The Canyon Lake Library hosted a tour for Ms. Smith’s 2nd grade class from Quail Valley Elementary School on May 15. Students enjoyed learning about the library facilities and services, exploring the library’s collection and getting a preview of the Summer Reading Program. At the conclusion of the tour, students gathered around in the Kid’s Cove to listen to a story read by the library’s manager, Amanda McLaughlin.

Tech Time will be held at the library tomorrow, May 25, from 12 to 2 p.m. During this time, patrons ages 18 and older can have their questions about the Internet, tech, or other devices answered by an expert with more than 15 years of experience in the field. Participants are encouraged to bring in their devices, such as laptops, smartphones and tablets.

The library will be closed on Monday, May 27, in observance of Memorial Day.

Miss Ginny’s Preschool Story Time, a program for children ages three to five, will meet on Friday, May 31, at 11:30 a.m. The every other Friday program includes an interactive story, music and movement activities. Parents may attend with their children in addition to older and younger children as long as they do not disrupt the program.

Toddler Story Time meets every Monday at 11 a.m. in the Kid’s Cove area at the library. Mrs. Blackford engages the children with stories, songs and other activities appropriate for toddlers ages three and younger. The program provides opportunities for young children to use their growing vocabulary and experience social interaction with other children. A craft is included in the program.

Book Clubs are available at the library for adults and children. Each club selects one book to read then meets at the end of the month to discuss topics from the reading. The Junior Book Club adds an extra craft or activity component related to the story. The library has copies of the monthly titles for members to read during the month.

The Knitting and Crochet Crafters program meets on the first and third Fridays of each month from 1 to 4 p.m. The part-social, part-educational program is open to new members of all skill levels. Loaner tools and supplies are available.

The library’s Roots to Grow program offers free homework help for students on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 to 11 a.m. High school students earn volunteer credit for assisting younger children in their studies. Students wishing to volunteer should contact the library in advance to express their interest.

The 2019 Summer Reading Program starts June 10 and runs through July 27. This year’s theme is “It’s Showtime!” The program is an incentive program to encourage kids to choose reading as a summer activity. Participants are encouraged to set personal reading goals and are rewarded with prizes such as toys, books and gift certificates when those goals are met each week. Registration is required to participate. A reading log will be issued to help kids keep track of minutes read. Children not yet reading may be read to by an adult. The library encourages early literacy and welcomes children of all abilities to participate.

The Kids Reptile Party returns to the library in July. Tickets are free and will be distributed once the date is announced.

Public computers are available for use at the library. Saving is possible with the use of a removable drive such as a USB. The library has an AWE computer for young children to use. It is preprogrammed with educational games and activities and is not attached to the Internet.

Patrons who cannot find a book at the library may utilize the free Zip Books program to have the book ordered and sent to them. Zip Books is another way to request books not owned by the Riverside Public Library.

The book is shipped directly to the patron using Amazon Prime. Once delivered to the patron, the book will be recorded by the library as being checked out. The book must be returned to the library two weeks from the date of delivery.
