Michelle and Bob Burns have learned to make the most of the fact that Bob, a captain for Delta Air Lines, has had to travel on the holidays many times.

Bob was assigned to fly a trip to Lihue, Kauai, over the Valentine’s Day holiday, which had a two-day layover on the island before returning to Los Angeles. Bob thought this would be the perfect opportunity to bring Michelle along to visit the island since she had never been to Kauai.

The couple stayed at the Kauai Marriott Resort on the bay in Lihue. On the first day, they drove up to Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, to see the many waterfalls and take a two-hour hike down into the canyon. They stopped in Poipu on the way back to have pre-Valentine’s Day “Mahi Mahi” dinner at one of Bob’s favorite restaurants, Keoki’s Paradise.

The next day, Michelle and Bob drove the other way around the island and went up into the Wailua River Valley. They stopped to enjoy the view of the Opaeka’a Falls. Although a helicopter ride was on the agenda, the weather did not cooperate on this trip. “It’s a good excuse to go back,” said Bob.
