Hortons present library butterfly program

Canyon Lake residents Ted and Nancy Horton presented a program on monarch butterflies at the Canyon Lake Library. More than 60 children and adults attended the program that consisted of a slideshow and video on the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. Ted shared information about the work he has done to plant butterfly weed in his own garden. Each family who attended received a box of crayons and a coloring book produced by Audubon International to take home.

Ted is a board member of Audubon International and has been concerned about the loss of 70 to 80 percent of monarchs in the area over the last 10 years due to development and loss of habitat.

Ted is devoted to helping reverse the decline of the monarch butterflies and believes that with little effort the chances of monarchs returning to Canyon Lake on their migratory path can be improved.

Monarchs are considered the “king” of the butterflies, hence the name monarch. Monarch butterflies go through four stages during one life cycle and through four generations in one year.
