How Lot 78 was renamed Holiday Harbor Park

In 1989, the Home Owners Club and the POA announced a contest to re-name the former Lot 78 waterfront property it had purchased on Village Way. “It’s time to name this recreational property in keeping with the other parks and beaches in our community,” said Home Owners Club President Vick Knight.

More than 60 entries were submitted in the contest, including some tongue-in-cheek names, such as “Costa Lotta Bay,” “Million Dollar Park” and “Omaha Beach,” which came with the explanation “because we had to fight so hard for it.” Several residents wanted to name the area “Paradise Park.”

Resident Marti Norris suggested Holiday Harbor, which won the nod from judges who represented the Community News, Home Owners Club and POA. She was awarded a gift card to use at the country club.

Years later, when the original Holiday Harbor sign was being replaced with the current sign, Marti contacted the POA general manager and asked it she could have it. She had her husband cement the sign in the ground near her pool in her backyard where it still stands today.

At the time of the contest, Marti and her husband were “weekenders.” They moved to Canyon Lake full-time a  few months after she won the contest. Marti’s suggestion to name Holiday Harbor was her first contribution to the community. As a full-time resident, Marti became active in the community and on Feb. 20, 2004, she was named Canyon Lake Woman of the Year at the 14th annual Installation Celebration and Recognition Banquet at the lodge. Marti works as a senior account executive at The Friday Flyer where she has been employed for more than 25 years.
