Lifelong Canyon Lake resident and newly appointed sailor Casyn Battleson, 18, graduated from the Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois, on Friday, Jan. 18.

In attendance were Casyn’s parents, Jenniver and Nick Lawrence of Canyon Lake, and aunt, MacKenzie Dore of Canyon Lake. Casyn’s grandparents, Stephanie and Harold Lawrence of Crab Orchard, Kentucky, joined them for a two-day visit after graduation.

Casyn spent eight weeks at the Recruit Training Command where she learned to abide by strict self-discipline and live by “Core Values of Honor, Courage and Commitment.”

The leadership and staff at RTC work to provide the fleet with world-class sailors who possess the basic skills necessary for naval service.

Casyn is currently in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where she will spend the next 14 weeks at the Hospital Corpsman class “A” School. Hospital Corpsmen perform duties as assistants to medical and dental professionals in the prevention and treatment of disease and injury and assist health care professionals in providing dental and medical care to naval personnel and their families. They may function as clinical or specialty technicians, medical administrative personnel and health care providers at medical treatment facilities.

They also serve as battlefield corpsmen with the Marine Corps, rendering emergency medical treatment to include initial treatment in a combat environment.
