Enjoy free programs at the Canyon Lake Library

All Canyon Lake Library programs are free thanks to the Friends of the Canyon Lake Library and the partnership between the City of Canyon Lake and the Riverside County Library System. A library card is required to check out items. The first library card is free; replacement cards are $1.

The new Knitting and Crochet Crafters program at the library will meet again today, Jan. 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. Any level of crafter may attend. A wealth of knowledge in knitting and crochet is present to assist any newcomer. Attendees should bring their own projects and materials to work on. Beginners may bring needles or a crochet hook and yarn but it is not necessary. Hooks and needles are available to use during class and some yarn has been donated. The library continues to accept donations of knitting and crafting supplies, including yarn, to get beginners started. This program meets monthly on the first and third Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m.

The program is primarily social, providing a place to meet for a few hours and chat. “In the current digital world, a fun place to get out for a few hours and visit with friends is becoming increasingly important,” said Librarian Sandra Brautigam.

The first meeting of the Technology for Seniors program was held on Jan. 12 and covered iPhones and tables. The second part of this four part series will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 10:30 a.m. and will cover droid phones and tablets. Attendees will need to bring their own devices to the program for use. A beginner session for Windows 10 is scheduled for Jan. 26 at 10 a.m. and a discussion about scams is scheduled for Feb. 2 at 10:30 a.m.

Toddler Story Time will not meet Monday, Jan. 21. The program will resume on Monday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. as part of the Play Day program. Play Day is a two-hour program that includes music, toys, a craft and plenty of time for children to practice sharing and using their developing vocabularies. The program also provides an opportunity for adults to socialize with other parents and caregivers. Typhanie Sharfner, a MomCo hostess and originator of mentoringtinyhumans.com, has a fun craft planned this month that involves using tempera paints. Children should wear old clothes or a protective apron.

Miss Ginny’s Story Time will meet on Friday, Jan. 25, at 11:30 a.m. The program, for children ages three to five, meets every other week and includes movement, music and a craft.

The Adult Book Club will meet on Jan. 28 at 4 p.m. The members are reading “The Chuckwagon Trail” by best-selling authors William W. Johnstone and J.A. Johnstone.

The Junior Book Club, for children in 4th through 7th grades, will meet on Jan. 30 at 4 p.m. Members are reading “Harry Potter and the Soccer’s Stone” by J.K. Rowling. The meeting includes activities the children do while they discuss the story of the month. Books are available at the library. The program welcomes new members.

The Canyon Lake Library will be closed on Monday, Jan. 21, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. The book drops will be available and online services will be accessible from the website rivlib.net.
