Year in Review – Part 3

The beginning of the year is not only a time to look to the future but it’s an apt time to reflect on the changes and revisit some of the events that happened in the community over the past 12 months.

Last week, The Friday Flyer featured Year in Review Part 2 with a look back at events that happened in the community from April through June 2018. This week, The Friday Flyer takes a look back at events that happened in the community from July through September 2018. This four-part serious will wrap up next week with a look back at October through December 2018.

July

The annual Canyon Lake Fourth of July Bike Ride hosted by the Waller family kicked off at 9 a.m. with a couple hundred participants gathering for a group photo in front of the Waller home on Longhorn Drive. The Wallers, who hosted the bike ride for the past 14 years, announced that they were moving to Colorado and that this would be the last bike ride the family would host.

The Family Matters Club hosted its annual Sandcastle Building and Pirate Treasure Dig on July 10 at Sunset Beach. Kids of all ages were invited to dig for pirate treasures in the sand and pick something from the treasure chest of goodies. After the dig, kids built their best sandcastle for an entry into a prize drawing.

The annual Junior Golf Camp concluded on July 13 with a family barbecue, awards ceremony and prize giveaway. More than 130 juniors ranging from ages five to 18 participated in the camp.

Only July 18, the Canyon Lake City Council unanimously placed the Public Safety and Local Control Continuation Measure on the November ballot. The measure passed, renewing the Public Safety and Local Control Continuation Measure to continue local funding to maintain essential services that included life safety services and keeping the Canyon Lake Fire Station open.

The Canyon Lake Association of Men held its annual July picnic at Holiday Harbor Park on the evening of July 18. Nearly 100 members and guests attended the luau theme party that included a pig ceremony, Polynesian dancers, raffles and a feast for all catered by Islanders Luau.

Forty-one players participated in the Pickleball Club’s Stars and Stripes Social Mixer on Thursday, July 19. Three new members joined the club at the conclusion of the event. Seven participants were juniors who participated in the club’s Junior Pickleball Clinic in June.

The Woman’s Club kicked off its 2018/2019 season with the new board’s first luncheon meeting on July 18. The group enjoyed a Sip and Dip after the meeting.

Canyon Lake Community Theatre brought Charles Schulz’s beloved comic to life in Clark Gesner’s classic musical “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” July 27 through July 29 in the Holiday Bay Room at the lodge.

The POA was in the process of constructing a new permanent Marine Patrol building at the Holiday Harbor Park launch area.

A new misting system was installed on the country club patio. The board approved $5,122 from the Capital Improvement Fund for the new system. New furniture, fire pits and heaters also were added to the patio.

Eleven-year-old Canyon Lake resident Evan Pinard competed with his father David at the California State Games on July 29 and won gold medals in the 3.0 division.

Canyon Lake seniors enjoyed fellowship and food at a luau themed potluck on July 29 at the senior center.

August

Thirty-nine members and seven guests of the Travel Club enjoyed a two-hour excursion aboard John Wayne’s  Wild Goose yacht on Aug. 4.

The POA sanctioned Girl Scout Troop 1735 during the Regular Session Board Meeting on Aug. 6.

Canyon Lake resident Sam Theodora celebrated his 80th birthday throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at a Los Angeles Angels baseball game on Aug. 7. The pitch was caught by Angels pitcher Justin Anderson, who later autographed the ball for Sam.

Summer Taco Tuesdays at the lodge came to an end on Aug. 7.

The Holy fire erupted in Holy Jim Canyon on Aug. 6., postponing the first day of the 2018/2019 school year for Lake Elsinore School District students.

The Canyon Lake City Council nomination period ended on Aug. 10. Incumbent Vicki Warren, incumbent Dawn Haggerty, Jeremy Smith and Kasey Castillo announced their candidacy for City Council. Smith and Castillo were elected to the two open seats.

Approximately 100 Paddle-boarders, kayakers and pedal-boaters braved the heat and the poor air quality due to the nearby Holy fire to participate in the Triathlon and Fitness Club’s 7th annual Paddle & Pedal Regatta on Aug. 11. A paddleboard race and club sponsored barbecue followed the event.

NBC and Telemundo owned stations teamed up with Animal Friends of the Valleys and hundreds of other shelters across the country to host the 4th annual Clear the Shelters on Aug. 18. Animal Friends of the Valleys lowered its pet adoption fee to $20 for the one-day nationwide pet adoption drive.

Ninety-one golfers escaped the Canyon Lake heat to attend the 10th annual Pismo Golf Getaway Aug. 19 through Aug. 22. The event started 10 years ago when Joe Kamashian and the late Fran Pothier decided to plan a golf outing to get away from the hot August days in Canyon Lake. The tradition continues on, drawing between 80 to more than 100 Canyon Lakers annually.

EVMWD announced on Aug. 22 that it would be purchasing water to import to Canyon Lake for the first time in eight years. EVMWD planned to add approximately 1,800-acre feet of water to the reservoir.

The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce held a Ribbon Cutting for Caregiver Provider on Aug. 22 in the Towne Center. Opened in 2009 by Canyon Lake resident Jane Lafferty, Caregiver Provider changed ownership in 2018 when Jane retired and Jennifer Dain, also a Canyon Lake resident, purchased the business.

September

On the evening of Sept. 3, residents gathered at Sunset Beach to enjoy summer’s final aloha. The 5th annual Maui Monday brought the tastes of islands to “A Little Bit of Paradise.” The event featured a Hawaiian themed menu, contests, music and performances. The highlights of the evening were the hula dancers, Samoan drummers, fire dancers and traditional Polynesian dances performed by the members of the professional Polynesian Entertainment Group.

The city and Senator Jeff Stone honored local first responders at the City Council meeting on Sept. 5. City Council also presented residents Nancy Carroll and Karen Bevans with a Certificate of Appreciation for their efforts in keeping the city’s Cooling Center open in the summer during extreme temperatures.

The Travel Club hosted its annual dinner dance on Sept. 7 at the lodge. More than 85 guests attended the luau-themed event that featured dinner catered by the Lighthouse Restaurant and music by One Guy and a Chick.

The Tennis Club held its Endless Summer Team Mixer on Sept. 8.  The winners were Danette Conlin, Kathy Valdez, Tammy Kennedy, Ed Basubas, Michael Holodofsky and Tom Bol.

Nine teams participated in the Canyon Lake Bassmasters Club monthly tournament on Sept. 8. The team of Chuck Moreno and Don Dietz came in first place with five fish weighing 15 pounds. Travis Smith and Chuck Emery took second place and Joe Merrill and Sal Gervasi placed third.

Thirty-six players participated in the Women’s Golf Club annual Member-Member Tournament on Sept. 11, 13 and 18.

New wave band Berlin returned to Canyon Lake for another performance on Sept. 15. The band’s 2017 performance was so popular that concert promoter Doug Schultz invited the band back to wrap up the POA’s 2018 “Concerts at the Lodge” series.

The Woman’s Club invites women in the community to join in honoring Wounded Heroes of America and Wreaths Across America during the club’s monthly meeting Sept. 19. Attendees wore red, white and blue attire in honor of veterans.

Hundreds of young anglers ages five to 15 fished around the lake with the hopes of catching the “big one” for the Bassmasters Club 32nd annual Kids Fishing Derby on Sept. 15.

The Torah Club held a viewing of “RBG” on Sept. 15 at New Hope Church. The 2018 documentary examines the life and career of  U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Canyon Lake received its 11th alum treatment the week of Sept. 17. The lake remained open during the treatment process.

The Wakeboard Club hosted its final Learn to Ride Day of the season on Sept. 22. More than 70 individuals of all ages participated in the event. Drivers Craig Brown, Dex Johnson, Dave Clarke and Ben Sims pulled riders continuously for more than six hours before the day was over.

The Lions Club held its annual Pancake Breakfast for the community on Sept. 23 at Holiday Harbor Park. Residents enjoyed a breakfast of pancakes, sausage and eggs for just $6. More than 225 breakfast tickets were sold.

The 8th annual Oktoberfest kicked off Canyon Lake’s fall events on Sept. 29 in the Towne Center. Sponsored by the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce, Oktoberfest featured a beer and wine garden, contests, vendors, food and live music by the American Bavarian Brass Band.

Canyon Lake Library celebrated Library Card Sign Up Month by offering incentives to those who signed up for a new library card in the month of September.
