Receive reward for signing up for library card

The Canyon Lake Library is celebrating National Library Card Sign Up Month with a reward and drawing.  Those who sign up for their first library card with the Riverside County Library System during the month of September will receive a free food coupon. The drawing is for a backpack with goodies such as a flying disc, earbuds, sunglasses and other useful things.

For those who already have a library card, the library is collecting “My Library is Incredible Because…” statements and drawings. This is in addition to the offerings of the American Library Association (ALA). The ALA is inviting entries on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #MyLibaryIsIncredible. Comments can also be added to the “I Love Libraries” Facebook page. From the entries, one winner will be selected to receive a $100 VISA gift card. The ALA event ends Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. The Canyon Lake Library’s efforts continue to the end of September. Its drawing will be held on Monday, Oct. 1.

Miss Ginny’s Story Time will celebrate teddy bears today, Sept. 7. Children are invited to bring their favorite teddy’s to the program. Parents, caregivers and other children are permitted into the story time room. This event for children ages three to five requires some ability to pay attention and follow directions. This free program includes stories, live music and movement and a craft to make and take home. Miss Ginny’s Story Time meets alternating Fridays. In September the following alternating Friday is Sept. 21; however, the library will be closed that day. Story Time will resume again on Oct. 5.

Toddler Story Time for children ages three and younger meets every Monday and includes a story and make and take home craft.

The Junior Book Club will meet on Sept. 26 at 4 p.m. and included a video chat with “The Nocturnals” author Tracey Hecht. Tracy will be available via Internet for an interactive Nocturnals read aloud writing workshop and Q&A. This free event will be held in the downstairs room in the City Hall building. The library has a small number of books available to Junior Book Club participants.

The Adult Book Club meets on the last Monday of the month at 4 p.m. New members are always welcome. The club is reading “The Sandcastle Girls” by Chris Bohjalian this month. The library has a few copies remaining. The book also is available for purchase through the RCLS website.

Roots to Grow Tutoring will be available in September on Saturdays at 10 a.m. The program provides volunteer opportunities for high school students to help others. Since the program works with volunteers, the library staff advises a call after 9:15 a.m. on Saturdays to confirm that volunteers are available. Tutoring is also available through the RCLS website.

The library’s Play Day program had record attendance in August. The program is held on the last Monday of each month at 10 a.m. and provides social time for children to interact with each other and for parents and caregivers to socialize with other adults. A craft is offered, developmental toys are available and a program of music and movement is provided.

All library programs are free and open to the public, made possible through the support of the Friends of the Canyon Lake Library and the City of Canyon Lake. Library membership is not required to attend programs but is required to check out materials and use many of the Library’s digital offerings.
