Regatta raises money for cancer research

Approximately 100 Paddle-boarders, kayakers and pedal-boaters braved the heat and the poor air quality due to the nearby Holy fire on Saturday to participate in the Triathlon and Fitness Club’s 7th annual Paddle & Pedal Regatta.

The non-competitive, non-motorized cruise of the East Bay started at 10 a.m. at Indian Beach. Club member Craig Graham opted to swim the distance. The cruise of the East Bay was followed by a paddleboard race and a club sponsored barbecue.

The winners of the youth paddleboard race are eight-year-old Lexi Jones and eight-year-old Rylie McVicker. The winners of the men’s paddleboard race are Kenny Kamashian, Mark Yegsigian and Robert Ortiz. Wendy Gallagher, Sue Cook and Karin Cassidy won the women’s paddleboard race. Scott Riegel and friend participated in the race in a double kayak. All winners received a medal.

A club barbecue lunch and a raffle featuring items donated by Impact Promotional Products raised $471 for cancer research. Team Iron Gideon presented a check for $2,500.

All donations are being donated to Padres Pedal the Cause to benefit cancer research at Moore’s Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute and Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.

The Triathlon and Fitness Club wishes to thank all of the volunteers and participants. The club is planning its next event, a swim/run workout and barbecue to be held on Sept. 22. The club also will be participating in the Trick or Tri Triathlon on Oct. 27. The details of both events will be posted on the club’s website at canyonlaketriathlonclub.com and on the club’s Facebook page at Canyon Lake Triathlon Club.
