Yacht Club awards scholarships to CL triplets

The Yacht Club chose Canyon Lake triplets Ashlyn, Mason and Ryan Dowell as its 2018 scholarship recipients. The club’s Scholarship Committee, Karen Doherty, Fran Tibbet and Kathy Paul, presented the scholarships to the Dowells during Temescal Canyon High School’s annual Senior Awards Ceremony on May 22. Each recipient received $650.

The Yacht Club honored the siblings at its annual Scholarship Potluck on June 28 at Roadrunner Park where the students read their winning essays and enjoyed a potluck dinner with their parents and club members.

The scholarships were open to high school seniors who reside in Canyon Lake and attend a local high school. To enter, students had to submit an application, school transcripts and a 500 minimum word essay on one of seven topics chosen by the Yacht Club.

Ashlyn’s essay illustrated how serving as president of Interact Club led to being involved in service projects and what it has meant to her. Ashlyn has a 4.2 GPA and, like her brothers, is also a member of the National Honor Society. Her campus life included being a member of the water polo and swim teams, serving as ASB historian and president of Interact Club. The Student of the Month Program honored Ashlyn in September 2017.

Ashlyn will be attending San Diego State University with her brother Ryan in the fall. She plans to major in biology and hopes to have a career in the medical field.

Mason submitted an essay on what he learned from running cross country and track throughout his high school years. He served as team captain in both his junior and senior years. Mason has a 4.2 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation and Interact Club. He’s also a member of the Canyon Lake Triathlon and Fitness Club.

Mason will be attending California Baptist University in the fall, majoring in mechanical engineering.

Ryan’s essay was about his first job and what he has learned and continues to learn from his employment experience. Ryan has a 4.1 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society, Interact Club and California Scholarship Federation. He served as class vice-president during his freshman and sophomore years and was a member of the swim and water polo teams. He is a member of the Canyon Lake Triathlon and Fitness Club.

Ryan will be attending San Diego State University in the fall and plans to major in aerospace engineering.

“The Yacht Club is pleased and proud to award our annual scholarship to a deserving Canyon Lake family,” said Scholarship Co-chair Karen Doherty.

The triplets were born and raised in Canyon Lake. Their parents, Stephanie and Daren Dowell, said they are grateful to the Yacht Club for providing this opportunity to their three children.
