Canyon Lake Woman’s Club honors anniversary, awareness

On Oct. 18, 1972, Canyon Lake women received a wake-up call inviting them to “come as they are to a breakfast.” That October meeting resulted in the organization of the Woman’s Club 45 years ago.

In honor of the club’s 45th anniversary and the “come as you are” wake-up call, the 2017-18 Canyon Lake Woman’s Club Board of Directors attend the club’s Oct. 18 meeting in their pajamas. President Sue Collins explained why the Board of Directors explained were sporting pajamas and the history of how the club was formed. All other members were asked to wear pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The speakers were Janelle Basham and Kimbo Slingerland from Bosom Buddies, a Canyon Lake organization founded in the late 80s dedicated to educating, inspiring and supporting newly diagnosed breast cancer patients during their breast cancer journey. Both ladies are breast cancer survivors.

The duo spoke on the topics of self-examination, mammograms, early detection, resources, recovery and support, to name a few.

Woman’s Club Publicity Chair Lyne Hall said, “It was super informative. They were very humorous and uplifting. One of them said, ‘We put the fun in Cancer.’ If anyone could, it would be these two ladies. If I ever got such a terrible diagnosis, I want those two ladies on my side.”
