Time to start planning for Parade of Lights

With Thanksgiving around the corner, the Yacht Club would like to remind residents that the Parade of Lights is only seven weeks away. Now is the time to start planning for the December 9 event.

Have you reserved, borrowed or purchased a generator yet? Have you purchased your lights and decorations for your boat? The planning needs to be done soon so that you can take advantage of the sales that many of the local stores are having on holiday lighting and decorations.

Bob Templeton, the Yacht Club’s past commodore, said, “Remember that your boat does not need to be the fancy-looking float that you see in the Rose Parade — it just needs to be decorated with lights. If you have ever been to any of the boat parades in Newport Beach, you know that many of the boats are just decorated with lights and are not trying to have a theme. The same applies to our parade. Just decorate your boat with lights and join in the fun of the evening.”

In the coming weeks, the registration form will be featured in The Friday Flyer and on the Yacht Club’s Facebook page. Those who plan to participate in the parade should fill out the form and return it as soon as possible so the club has a general idea of how many boats will be in the parade this year.

Last minute entries can sign up on the on the day of the event at the Eastport launch ramp at 4:30 p.m. Boats that do not go through the registration process will not be eligible for the judging and prizes, but are still welcome to participate. Club and group floats are also encouraged to participate.
