Learn to play pickleball through free workshops

Free pickleball workshops are being offered to Canyon Lake residents in October. Each workshop will include one lesson a week for three weeks. All workshop participants will be invited to join pickleball club members at the club’s monthly Twilight Mixer on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m.

Pickleball workshop dates and times are as follows:

First lesson:

Tuesday, Oct. 3: beginners-intermediates from 8 to 9 a.m.

Wednesday, Oct. 4: beginners-intermediates from 7 to 8 p.m.

Wednesday evening lesson is designed for those who cannot attend morning lessons.

Thursday, Oct. 5: advanced from 8 to 9 a.m.

Second lesson:

Tuesday, Oct. 10: beginners-intermediates from 8 to 9 a.m.

Wednesday, Oct. 11: beginners-intermediates from 7 to 8 p.m.

Wednesday evening lesson is designed for those who cannot attend morning lessons.

Thursday, Oct. 12: advanced from 8 to 9 a.m.

Third lesson:

Tuesday, Oct. 17: beginners-intermediates from 8 to 9 a.m.

Wednesday, Oct. 18: beginners-intermediates from 7 to 8 p.m.

Wednesday evening lesson is designed for those who cannot attend morning lessons.

Thursday, Oct. 19: advanced from 8 to 9 a.m.

Lesson Objectives:

The beginner lesson objects are: keeping score, serving and where to stand in position, what is the non-volley zone or “kitchen,” what is a “dink shot,” develop hand-eye coordination, basic forehand, backhand and volley strokes.

The intermediate lesson objectives are: what position to be in during the point, when to hit the ball shallow or deep, moving up to and staying at the non-volley line in every point and broadening arsenal of shots.

The advance lesson objectives are: strategies to work as a team and cover the court, when to use which shots and why, how to perfect the ready position before and between shots, how to move opponent out of position and create openings.

There will be a maximum of eight pickleballers in each skill level with a wait list for dropouts. Reservations are on first come, first served basis. Equipment will be provided. Bring a chair, water and towel. Must wear tennis (court surface) shoes.

The Pickleball Club’s Social Play days are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 8 to 10 a.m. and 6 to 10 p.m.; open play days are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 10 a.m. with one court being reserved for beginners and clinics.
