Randy and Mavis Schutz checked off another item on their bucket list when they traveled to Cuba May 28 through June 4.

The couple spent two days in Havana; the first day being a walking tour of Old Havana’s plazas: Armas, Catedral, San Francisco and Vieja. The highlight was lunch at La Bodeguita del Medeo, one of Hemmingway’s two favorite bars. “The interior was covered with graffiti-much of it saluting Hemmingway and Cuba,” said Mavis.

Day two brought another highlight, visiting a senior center in one of the neighborhoods. “Because we were on a person to person tour, and were given the opportunity to attend many lectures/classes about all aspects of the Cuban people, we were encouraged to meet the people first hand,” said Mavis. “Meeting three Cuban seniors was delightful.”

The next city the couple visited was Cienfuegos, a city on the southern coast of Cuba. “It was indeed beautiful and much different than Havana. “We stopped at a beautiful auditorium built in 1889 and influenced from French and Italian architects,” said Mavis. “That afternoon we had a private performance by a well-known choir, who gave a stunning performance.”

Lastly, Randy and Mavis sailed on to Santiago de Cuba, which became their favorite city. They had lunch in a Cuban in-home restaurant, which are known as paladares. “The food was excellent, best we’d had,” said Mavis.

Mavis said they came away from their trip with a great perspective of the proud Cuban people. “They are extremely proud and we were so happy we got a chance to visit their country,” she said.
