“Grandma” Linda and her soulmate of 39 years, Roy Berthold, made their final chapter move from her San Jose home of 50 years to Canyon Lake in April of 2015. This, to be closer to her grandchildren, Amanda (14), Brianna (14) and Connor (12) and to be better cared for by her son, Dave Martilla, and his wife, Jully.Linda was born on March 10, 1924 in Poland to parents Jean and Stanley Ulansky. In 1930 her family, including younger siblings Mathew and Vera, immigrated to Canada. Vernon, British Columbia was their final stop with the additions of Walter, Ruth and Margaret along the way.
Linda was the only Ulansky to venture south of the border, making her way to California via Washington.
While married to Arthur Martilla and residing in San Jose they were blessed with her only child, David. With Art’s passing in 1974, Linda’s only focus was to raise and care for her 11-year-old son. She did a phenomenal job balancing it all on a waitress’s pay. She even found time to be courted by and marry Roy Berthold. They truly did live to love and care for each other.
Their routines together included coffee and breakfast, reading the newspaper (including her morning crossword puzzle), gardening, caring for the local critters, league bowling at Mission Lanes, cooking and barbecuing, traveling, special occasion dinners at the local steak houses and watching Wheel of Fortune.
She traveled to Canada this August to see, and ultimately say goodbye to, her surviving siblings Matt Ulansky, Walter Ulansky and Margaret Murphy and their families. It was a beautiful visit for all.
Linda was laid to rest next to Roy, and overlooking her son’s Father, Art, at Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose on Tuesday, December 6, 2016. A memorial page can be viewed by searching Dignity Memorial Linda Berthold.
You are our MATRIARCH! We will always love and miss you. Thank You and Rest in Peace.
