Fall is a great time and brings good memories

Fall has officially begun! The wholesome and warming smells, along with the lively festivities, make fall an amazing time of the year. Everyone has accepted the fact that school is back in session and, when it comes to fall, it is time to have some fun.

One of my favorite things is to walk into the house after a long day of school and practice and smell newly-lit pumpkin candles all over the place. We definitely make sure to stock up on those. My whole family loves fall, especially my mom. She has had pumpkin-scented candles and fall decorations out for weeks already.

One of my favorite parts about fall is that it starts to cool down a little bit from the summer heat, along with the holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving. My dad’s favorite part is the start of football season. He loves to hunker down on Sundays and watch the game.

At school, there is a lot that goes on during fall. Coming up soon we have the homecoming game and the homecoming dance. Since I am the sophomore class president, I am in charge of constructing the sophomore float for the halftime show at the game. We have spent the last few weeks in ASB coming up with theme ideas and ways to tie in new dress-up days and lunchtime activities with that theme.

Homecoming is a lot of work. We have to make sure that the venue is decorated, the halftime show is the best it can be, and all of the students are able to feel included. Although it is hard work, homecoming is an amazing event. We hold the dance at Mulligan’s and it is a lot of fun. It is coming up in just a few weeks and I am really looking forward to it.

Also at school during the fall, the fall sports seasons are getting underway. The “Red Sea,” which is the cheering section at Elsinore football games, is back and has been expanded in the bleachers this year to allow more students to be a part of it. The cheering section makes the football games a lot more fun.

My fall sport, cross country, has been in season for a couple of weeks now. Cross country is a sport that is often overlooked and forgotten, but the sport really is a lot of fun and takes a lot of hard work and discipline. Our meets are really awesome – all of them are different. Some have games to win free stuff or some are night races with music playing. The cross country season is another reason that I love the fall.

Halloween is one of my favorite times out of the whole year. All of the spooky decorations go up, and the giant candy bags go on sale in the stores. We do not get a whole lot of trick or treaters around where I live, but we always get the big bag of candy, so there is always a lot left over for me.

I love watching scary movies all throughout October, and I love looking through the Halloween stores. I have not dressed up for the past couple of years, so I am really excited for this year because me and some of my friends are planning on dressing up and maybe going trick or treating. I love carving pumpkins and I am planning on making some really cool ones this year.

We have a Halloween tradition in cross country too, and this year I actually get to be a part of it – not the victim. Halloween comes a couple days before league finals every year, so at practice on Halloween, the coaches tell the returning runners to go on our run for the day. The freshmen have to stay behind and the coaches tell them about how our run goes through a tunnel under the freeway. The coaches tell them to be careful because there are sometimes homeless people in the tunnel and it gets really dark, and that is why we run it for Halloween.

However, to the freshmen’s surprise, the returning runners all hide in the tunnel and scare them as they run through. Most of us figured it out last year before we got to the tunnel, but It was still scary when we ran through fake spider webs and people came out of nowhere.

Fall is a great time and brings lots of good memories to everyone, young or old. As an adult, I will always make sure to have an abundance or pumpkin candles in my house, along with the best Halloween decorations around. I am really looking forward to what is to come this cross country season and everything else to come this fall.
