Hunter Newlin

Canyon Lake golfers have had their eye on Hunter Newlin for several years. As far back as 7th grade, he was featured in The Friday Flyer after a group of golfers, seeing Hunter’s commitment to the game and proficiency on the course, went in together on a gift that included a full set of high quality clubs, a professional fitting, new golf bag, shirt and golf balls. Golf Pro Pat Kemball also contributed five free lessons.

Hunter went on to play varsity golf all four years at Temescal Canyon High School and was Sunbelt League MVP his freshman and sophomore years. In his sophomore year, he was 5th Place Southern California CIF Regional Individual, and the first golfer from TCHS to qualify for the State Finals. He also was recipient of Valley Junior Golf’s Ricky Fowler Award for lowest scoring average in 2014.

Now in his senior year, Hunter is 4th Place Southern California CIF Regional Individual and State Finals Qualifier. He was the only Inland-area golfer to make the CIF-State Boys Golf Championship, held Wednesday at the San Gabriel Country Club. It was a disappointing day for him as he shot an 11-over-par 83 and tied for 52nd place.

Hunter is a member of the SCPGA Junior Tour, Valley Junior Golf and the Canyon Lake Family Golf Club. He was the winner of the Canyon Lake City Championship in 2013 and the Family Golf Club Championship in 2013 and 2014. He has been a volunteer at the Canyon Lake Junior Golf Clinic the past four years, and both the Family Golf Club and the 9ers Golf Club have awarded him college scholarships.

In addition to diligence on the golf course, Hunter has remained diligent in the classroom. On honor roll all four years, he is graduating in the top 10 percent of his class with an overall 3.978 GPA. He also is an AP Scholar with honors, having passed five AP tests last year with an average score above 3.5.

He has committed to attend and play golf at William Jessup University in Rocklin, California this fall, where he has been awarded both academic and golf scholarships.

Hunter’s parents, Steve and Denise Newlin, will celebrate his graduation and accomplishments at the County Club today, June 3, and invite all who know him to join them on the patio anytime between 5:30 and 8 p.m.
