Golfers invited to play in upcoming tournaments

Spring Scholarship Tournament

On Thursday, April 21, the 9ers Golf Club is hosting a Spring Scholarship Tournament. It begins at 9:15 a.m.; tee off is at 10. All golfers are invited to participate in the club’s first tournament to raise fund for a worthy Canyon Lake student who has a passion for golf and a desire to continue their education.

The fee is $35, plus green fee, and includes lunch. Lunch only is $20. Participants will have the opportunity to win prizes and bid on donations, including a LoJack (valued at $700), a week’s stay in a Big Bear cabin and a week’s stay in a Yosemite cabin. Those who would like to play or make a donation are invited to sign up in the Golf Pro Shop.

Ladies who would like to play with the 9ers are invited to contact Linda  Kielty at 951-746-2250. All levels of golfers are welcome. The club meets each Thursday in the Magnolia Room at 9:30 and tees off at 10.

‘Diamonds in the Rough’ Tournament

The Women’s Golf Club is hosting its annual Member/Guest Golf Tournament, “Diamonds in the Rough,” on May 13. Members of the Canyon Lake 9ers, Family Golf or any lady with an established handicap is encouraged to participate and will be paired with one of the 18-hole golfers. The entry fee is $80, which includes a light breakfast, lunch, gross and net prizes, and an “amazing tee prize.”  For more information, contact Cathy Barr at 951-246-1123 or Valerie Montgomery at 951-244-5193.

Doe’s Derby Tournament

The 29th  annual Doe’s Derby Tournament, which is sponsored by CLIPPS, will be held on Tuesday, May 24, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start during the regular Tuesday play day. The tournament is no longer a senior tournament with an age restriction; it is now open to all Canyon Lake women who have an established golf handicap.

Participants can sign up in the Pro Shop as a single, twosome or foursome.  The tournament fee of $35 per person includes lunch and awards at the Country Club following play. Both gross and net awards will be given in each flight as well as the over-the-field net award.

Organizers invite members of the Women’s Golf Club, Family Golf Club and the 9ers Golf Club, as well as any other Canyon Lake women who have an established handicap, to participate. For more information, contact Barbara Albrecht at 951-244-4268 or Joanna Spiller at 951-244-1553.

After Lunch Bunch

Twenty stalwart souls showed up last Friday on a cold, drizzly day for the weekly game. The format was Two Best Balls of the Foursome. Results were as follows:

1st: Bob Stinson, Jim Magill, Fran Pothier and Bill Levis, 117

Skins winners were Bill Levis, Chuck Hudson, Jim Paulis, Jeff Roach and Hal Stiffler. Next week’s game will be Four Man Tin Whistle; the committee will pick the teams.

The After Lunch Bunch is a weekly Friday game for any male golfer with a handicap. Tee-off is around 10 a.m. Sign up between 8:30 and 9:15 a.m. in the Magnolia Room, or by phone at 249-4565 or 237-6102. The entry fee is $5; there is an optional skins game for an additional $5.

Family Golf Club

Membership in the Family Golf Club is open to all golfers – men, women and youths are welcome. The club’s official golf day is Wednesday, at approximately 11:30 a.m. Some members schedule golf days on Mondays, Fridays or Saturdays at 11:30.

The tournament director works closely with Golf Pro Pat Kemball and his staff to assure that tournaments are balanced. Organizers say all members enjoy a fun and friendly atmosphere.

The Family Golf Club is a member of the Southern California Golf Association (SCGA). It holds open meetings the third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Magnolia Room at the Country Club.
