Luck of the Irish? Residents send pictures, stories

When it comes to commercialized dates, March is best known for St. Patrick’s Day. With that in mind, The Friday Flyer invited residents who are from Ireland or who have traveled to Ireland to share their stories. Several responded with pictures of “kissing the Blarney Stone” and other stories.

According to, world statesmen, literary giants and famous actors have joined the millions of pilgrims climbing the steps of Blarney Castle to kiss the Blarney Stone and gain the “gift of eloquence.” Once upon a time, visitors had to be held by their ankles and lowered head first over the battlements. Now one kisses it by leaning backwards (holding onto an iron railing) from the parapet walk. The reward is the gift of eloquence.

This “Luck of the Irish” series will continue next week with a story about a Canyon Lake couple who met and married in Dublin, and a Canyon Lake group of golfers that suffered tragedy and bad luck on their 2002 trip to the Emerald Isle.
