Start the New Year right with ‘Funk Fitness’

Looking for a fun way to get in shape in the New Year? A new exercise class will be starting January 5, led by Koolboy, a Canyon Lake resident featured in the the November 13 issue of The Friday Flyer. “Funk Fitness” will be offered three times a week and provide a combination of non-complex dance moves to popular funk music from the 70s and 80s.

Hip hop legend and pop locker Koolboy has worked with many popular West Coast rappers, including Snoop Dog and Kendrick Lamar. Poplucking is a form of urban dance that originated in California in the late 1970s and involves rhythmic contractions of the dancer’s muscles to the beat of funk music. Koolboy has been in more than 200 music videos and, in 2008, was the first dancer to receive an award at the West Coast Hip Hop Music Awards.

Koolboy started his Funk Fitness class in 2009 and has taught the class throughout South Riverside County.

About the class, he says “Funk Fitness is a fun class for all ages and levels. It’s not a hip hop class in the sense that hip hop requires very complicated and technical movements. This is a dance exercise class that has easy steps but still gives you a good workout. Everyone can do it and everyone loves it!”

Funk Fitness classes will be $7 per class. Punch cards are available at POA Members Services: 5 classes for $35 or 11 classes for $70.

Starting January 5 classes will be offered:

  • Tuesdays at 10 a.m. in the Pool View Room at the Lodge
  • Thursdays at 10 a.m. in the Holiday Bay Room at the Lodge
  • Thursdays at 7:15 p.m. at the Lodge (room to be determined)
