Letter: El Niño

Editor, The Friday Flyer:

The article, “Trees down: blame drought or El Niño?” (The Friday Flyer, September 18), awards an intimidating insight for those residing in Canyon Lake as well as those in surrounding areas into what could be their future; El Niño has the potential to become one of the strongest on record, setting up a pattern that could bring one-time storms this winter to drought-parched California.

However forlorn this situation is, people are taking early precautions for this event. Residents are pruning trees, cleaning out house gutters to allow for better water flow, fixing as well as reinforcing their roofs to prevent water from entering their homes. Protecting one’s house would not only aid in resisting water, but to help prevent damage to a home if water is to get in.

The future is what we make of the present, the time is now. Let us hope that El Niño does minimal, if any damage to the land to keep a safe and secure terrain for our generation as well as for generations to come.
