Caregivers Connection

Anyone caring for a loved one for illnesses such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, stroke, heart issues or Parkinson’s is welcome to attend Caregivers Connection, which provides an opportunity for men and women to discuss common problems, needs and experiences and to learn from one another.

The group meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, from 10 a.m. to noon in room 6 of the gym at Canyon Lake Community Church. On September 28, Jane Farmer and her daughter Shannon will speak to the group about dementia. They will discuss how to help those who may be experiencing stages of grief and the varying emotions that accompany this progression. A question and answer session will follow the discussion.

Titan Football

See the Temescal Canyon High School Titans play tonight, September 25,, at 7 p.m. at home vs. JW North High School. Admission is $8. Next week is a bye week.

On October 8, junior varsity will play at home vs. Perris High School, with a start time of 4 p.m. Admission is free. Also that day, freshmen will go up against Perris High School at Perris, 175 East Nuevo Rd. in Perris, with the game starting at 4 p.m. Tickets are $7. Varsity will play an away game at Perris on October 9. Gates open at 6 p.m.; game starts at 7. Tickets are $8.

Bring this News Brief and eat at Chili’s any time on October 15; mention you are there to support TCHS Football. The program will receive 15 percent of proceeds. Homecoming will be on October 16 with the theme, “Out of This World.”

Tennis Classes Starting

Parent Child Yoga

The Parent Child Yoga Creative Moment Class for children ages 2 through 8 meets on Wednesdays, from 4:15 to 4:45 p.m. in the Pool View Room at the Lodge. This is a free class; however, it is not a drop-off program. Parents/caregivers are required to remain with their children at all times and are encouraged to participate in the class. Farmers Market Pet Parade

The Canyon Lake Farmers Market will have its annual Pet Parade on Sunday, October 11, at noon in the Towne Center. The categories in the pet costume contest are Cutest, Spookiest, Funniest, Most Original and Pet/Owner Look Alike. There will be prizes and ribbons.

Paint and Wine

The Canyon Lake Art Association invites community members to a Paint and Wine event at the Rebelde Winery, 530 Crane St. in Lake Elsinore on Saturday, October 24, from 3 to 6 p.m. The cost of $35 will include a glass of wine, cheese and crackers, painting canvas (to take home), and the use of paints, brushes and aprons. The event will be relaxing and entertaining.

Calling All Artists

Visual artists, ceramicists and photographers are invited to participate in the 2015 Canyon Lake Art Association Studio Tour on Saturday, November 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost to enter is $10 and participants must be a member of the Art Association ($25 membership fee).

Holiday Home Tour

Every year on the first Sunday of December (December 6 this year ) the Canyon Lake Woman’s Club puts on its Holiday Home Tour. This year’s theme is “There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays.”

The club has begun its search for “wonderful Canyon Lake homes” for the tour. Anyone who loves to decorate or who has a spectacular home to put on the tour is invited to contact Tour Chair Candy Petersen at 951-246-2028 or jandcpetersen@roadrunner.com.

Calling All Crafters! 

Adult crafters of all ages are invited to participate in the 15th annual Canyon Lake Holiday Boutique sponsored by the Senior Work Group. This year’s boutique will be on Saturday and Sunday, November 7 and 8, at the Senior Center. All items must be handcrafted. The entry fee is $30, with 15 percent of the crafter’s sales donated to the Senior Center.

Signups will be held at the Senior Center from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. every Monday, September 14 through October 19. There will be one evening signup on October 12 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, contact Kathy Barbay at 951-805-3278 or Betty Cannavino at 951-244-4126.

Scholarships Available

The Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) is devoted to the educational advancement of women through scholarships, grants, awards and loans. P.E.O. scholarship opportunities are now available for undergraduate and graduate California women studying in a variety of fields including health care, education, music, fine arts and the legal profession. These scholarships will be awarded for the fall 2016 school year. Application forms are available online from September 1, 2015 through January 10, 2016. Completed packets are due no later than February 1, 2016.

MOMS Next

Mothers of school aged kids are invited to MOMS Next, a ministry of MOPS International. It meets every second and fourth Tuesday, 9 to 11 a.m., at Canyon Lake Community Church.

Bingo at the Senior Center

The Lioness Club hosts Bingo every first and third Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Senior Center. Games are open to all members of the community and are $20 for a 12-sheet set and $10 for a six-sheet set. Funds raised by bingo are contributed to Lions’ projects for the sight-impaired and the needy of the area.

Genealogy Research

Pastor Pete Van Dyke of Canyon Lake Community Church is leading two 13-week bereavement support groups. Information provided at both groups is identical.

One group, which started August 17, is meeting Monday evenings, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The other is meeting Wednesday mornings, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Both meet in the Canyon Lake Community Church Chapel (Building A). To register, call the church office at 951-244-1877.

Farmers Market

The Farmers Market operates every Sunday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the upper section of the Towne Center parking lot. It features fresh produce from local farmers and fresh flowers from area growers as well as handcrafted items, vendor merchandise and freshly prepared food. It’s a good place to pick up fresh food for holiday meals and gifts from local vendors.

‘Hello Dolly’

The Welk Theatre presents “Hello Dolly,” starring Cynthia Ferrer and Randy Doney. Director/Choreographer Ray Limon returns to Welk to stage this classic piece of American theater. “Hello Dolly” through November 15 with five shows per week on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Host Families Sought

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs, in cooperation with area high schools, is looking for local families to host boys and girls between the ages of 15 to 18 from a variety of countries: Norway, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Japan, to name a few.

ASSE students are enthusiastic and excited to experience American culture while they practice their English. They also love to share their own culture and language with their host families.

The exchange students have pocket money for personal expenses and full health, accident and liability insurance. ASSE students are selected based on academics and personality, and host families can choose their student from a wide variety of backgrounds, countries and personal interests.

Breast Cancer Resources

Michelle’s Place is a breast cancer resource center serving this area, located at 27645 Jefferson Ave., Ste. 117, in Temecula. The center’s mission is to provide emotional and educational support to those touched with breast cancer and facilitate breast health care services. Clothing Wanted

A couple in Canyon Lake regularly makes deliveries of food and clothing to the Riverside City Mission, where the needs of the hungry and homeless are continuous. Donations can be dropped off at the Coldwell Banker office in the Towne Center, 31620 Railroad Canyon Rd.

Lock Vehicles

Canyon Lake Community Patrol reminds residents to double-check the doors and windows in their vehicles each evening and be sure alarm systems are activated. Records show most thefts from vehicles in Canyon Lake occur because doors were left unlocked or windows left open. They also say residents shouldn’t leave items of value in front yards or driveways.

Open cars and valuables left outside can lead to “crimes of opportunity” that can be easily prevented. If a crime is in progress, call 9-1-1 immediately. Then call Community Patrol.
