Dr. Robinson (both of them!) in Towne Center for 30 years and still taking care of smiles

There are painted light panels in the patient rooms at Canyon Lake Dentistry that Geoff Robinson looked up at as a baby. Thirty years later he is filling and pulling teeth under those very same panels, sometimes for patients who remember him as a toddler. Geoffrey Robinson’s father is Dr. William Brent Robinson, D.D.S., founder of Canyon Lake Dentistry, where Geoff also now has his practice. The office is located in the center back building of the Towne Center.

Brent Robinson and his wife Cindy opened Canyon Lake Dentistry in the Towne Center in November 1985. The Robinsons’ Canyon Lake story began when Brent was a sophomore in dental school at Loma Linda University and visited the community in the early 1980s to go water skiing. He and a friend enjoyed it so much, they bought the cheapest lot they could find in 1981 and registered a boat together so they could ski any time they wanted.

At the time, Goeff was still the twinkle in his father’s eye, as Brent and his high school sweetheart, Cindy, were married at the age of 20 in 1980. Cindy finished dental hygiene school at Loma Linda in 1983; Brent finished dental school at Loma Linda in 1985.

Together they started Canyon Lake Dentistry in the Towne Center; though at the time, says Brent, they weren’t sure the area could support a full time dental office. Geoffrey was born in November 1984, so in a way, helped in the founding of the business – if only as the reason for those cartoon light panels.

When the office opened in November 1985, Brent and Cindy had one part-time assistant and their office occupied one-third of the space it does now. It has expanded twice since then and now runs from the front to the back of the building. Brent and Goeff’s office overlooks the Golf Course, where Brent says he used to play a couple of holes on slow days before the fence went up and cut off his access.

The Robinsons bought a home in Canyon Lake and raised Goeff and two daughters here; Kelli was born in August 1986 and Brooke was born in October 1991. Goeff remembers playing in Canyon Lake Little League and riding his ATV in the backyard. Cindy and the girls spent a lot of time riding horses at the Equestrian Center.

Motorcycles and horses eventually are what led Brent and Cindy to sell their Canyon Lake home in 1996 and buy acreage in Murrieta. But the dental practice continued to flourish in Canyon Lake.

The three children pursued their education in professional fields. Kelli became a dental hygienist and Brook became a registered nurse. Initially, Geoff had no interest in following in his father’s footsteps; choosing instead to attend law school.

However, according to Brent, his son didn’t care for the student culture at law school, and decided to pursue dentistry, graduating from dental school at Loma Linda University in June 2012. After Geoff finished school, Brent did not assume he would join the practice, but he eventually started coming in one day a week. Brent says this gave the father and son time to transition into a successful team.

Now Geoff handles 90 percent of the patient care while Brent handles most of the accounting, payroll, supplies, etc. Although Brent is semi-retired and now enjoys traveling with Cindy, he still comes into the office a couple of days a month for patient care, since some of his original patients still ask for him.

Brent says, without a doubt, the greatest rewards of his practice in Canyon Lake are the people he’s met along the way and the friendships he’s formed.

“I have many patients who have become life-long friends and others who I have seen grow from 2 or 3 years old to young adults with families and kids of their own,” he says. “Obviously, being in a small town can be challenging, especially with the surrounding valley growing and more dentists entering the area. But overall, our my experience has been great and our patients are very loyal, which makes our job easy.”

Canyon Lake Dentistry provides complete dentistry for all ages, including cosmetic, preventive care, extractions, implants, bleaching, crowns, bridges, fillings, dentures, partials, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and 24-hour emergency care.
