Arts and Entertainment: ‘Steel Magnolias’ coming to the Lodge in February

Canyon Lake Community Theatre is preparing to present the timeless comedy/drama, “Steel Magnolias,” in February, directed by Coco Morrison and produced by Ilene Moore.

Revolving around Truvy’s Beauty Parlor in a small parish in Louisiana, “Steel Magnolias”  is the story of a close-knit circle of friends whose lives come together at the salon and take viewers on a delightful, hilarious, yet bittersweet journey via curlers, hairdryers, gossip and nails.

Recreating the characters the movie version made famous – starring Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine and Sally Field – is a cast of Canyon Lakers and other local actors.

MaryAnne Stevens will play the role of Truvy, the salon owner; Ceeja Barr is the frail and soon-to-be-wed Shelby; Suzanne Bolton will play Shelby’s mother M’Lynn; Ann Walker is the feisty, sour-tempered Ouiser; Lindsey Sethman is the confused and complicated Annelle; and Michelle Swan is the recently widowed, rich Clairee, Ouiser’s best friend.

Ilene says, “These strong and dynamic women make us laugh and cry as the realities of their lives unfold in this sparkling classic. Filled with humor and heartbreak, you won’t want to miss this show, for sure!”

Show dates are Friday and Saturday, February 20 and 21, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, February 22, at 3 p.m., in the Holiday Bay Room at the Lodge. Watch The Friday Flyer for the Sunday brunch/show details.
