Benters’ Fairlane is hot at Reno’s Hot August Nights

Benters’ Fairlane is hot at Reno’s Hot August NightsBy Sharon RiceThe Friday Flyer Bob and Bev Benter’s classic yellow and white 1957 Ford Fairlane, which appeared with Britney Spears in a retro 2002 Pepsi Cola commercial, was once again in the spotlight during the recent Hot August Nights car show in Reno. The Benters attend the premier car show every year, but this year decided to put their Fairlane in the Atlantis Cruise–an event in which classic cars cruise through the Reno hotel’s parking lot and are selected for further judging. Event organizers estimate that 4,000 cars cruised through the parking lot over the course of three days.
Few cars make it to the final round of judging, however. “As you’re cruising, the first judge asks you if you want to be judged and other judges decide whether you’re acceptable for judging,” Bob explains. Those cars deemed acceptable are sent to a staging area where still other judges decide which cars will be among the best of the best for the final judging that evening.
Only 20 cars are accepted for the final judging on each of the three evenings of the cruise and many of them are worth a half million to a million dollars. “We call ours an economy cars compared to the others,” Bob says with a chuckle. “Atlantis gives away prizes totaling $5,000 a night to the winners.”
The Benters were pleased their car was one of the winners, earning $500, and were just happy to be in the same company as the car that won $1,500 as Best of Show–a Dusenberg convertible worth one-and-a-half million dollars.
