Fitness is fun in this year-round playground

Resolutions have been made and many Canyon Lakers are now into their first week of pursuing health and fitness in this New Year 2015. Fortunately there are opportunities for all ages to be active in recreational sports and fitness classes here in the community.

Although the “Fit Community 5K/10K” won’t take place this January, plenty of people have hit the streets streets running – or at least jogging or walking – to burn off holiday calories and pursue goals of health and fitness.

For those who prefer their exercise in water, the Pool is closed until March but the annual Fish Out of Water class started this week and is held each morning in the Pool View Room at the Lodge, starting at 8:30 a.m. The Association also sponsors several other dance and exercise classes that meet throughout the week (see schedule below).

Several of the clubs focus on fitness and welcome new members at any time. The Tennis Club is one of the larger and more active clubs in the community. It offers Social Play each morning, starting at 9 a.m. It’s open to all levels of players and is a way to meet other players without committing to a schedule. Members also compete in monthly tournaments.

The Tennis Club will host a New Member Tournament tomorrow, January 10, starting at 9 a.m. Although it’s too late to participate in this tournament (registration was due January 7), Club President Marga Kidd would like to invite residents who have played in the past to pick up a racket and get reacquainted with the sport, saying, “Become part of one of the most fun and active clubs in town!”

Another active club is Senior Chair Volleyball, whose motto is “Someday we might slow down, but we will never quit.” This large, socially-active group meets in the Holiday Bay Room at the Lodge each Tuesday and Friday, 9:35 to 11 a.m., unless another event is scheduled in the room. The website, clscvc.webs.com, provides the schedule and other details.

An unofficial spinoff group from the Water Aerobics classes and Chair Volleyball group meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings to take walks of approximately three miles in and around the community. Known as the Friends Out of Water (FOOW), walkers set out promptly at 8:30 a.m. To learn more, visit clfoow.webs.com. All are welcome.

Another recreational club actively seeking members right now is ShowCal Skiers water ski show team. Club President Ted Schiafone calls show skiing “a great family sport” and points out that members don’t need to own a boat and ski equipment. “While the team boasts several former pro and amateur show skiers, many of the members learned to water ski just this past summer,” he says. During the winter months, members practice their routines on dry land. For more information, contact Membership Director Mary Tortomasi at 951-722-2010 or visit www.showcalskiers.org.

The Water Ski Club and Wakeboard Club also are very active and sponsor Learn-to-Ski and Learn-to-Ride Days in the summer. A few of the hardier members continue to practice their sport over the winter months. Canyon Lake truly is a year-round playground.
