OCTOBER 13, 2017 THE FRIDAY FLYER A-7
Members of the Canyon Lake Quilters group wrap Andy Morrison in the quilt he won through a free drawing the quilters hold for veterans each year during the annual Veter- ans Day Celebration in the Towne Center .
Quilters to hold free raffle for CL veterans
Members of the Canyon Lake Quil- ters create Quilts of Valor quilts and present them to veterans throughout the year. As in past years, the group will hold a free drawing for a Quilts of Valor quilt during Canyon Lake’s annual Veterans Day Celebration on Nov. 11. The drawing is for veterans only.
The Quilt of Valor Foundation is a national program established to honor veterans of all services. Its goal is to cover all physically or psychologi- cally wounded service members with a freedom quilt, honoring them for their sacrifices. The movement began
in 2003 and has now spread across the United States.
The Canyon Lake Quilters have been presenting Quilts of Valor quilts for approximately 10 years. “The la- dies are proud of the service all vet- erans have given to our country. It is a small thing that we can do to show our appreciation,” said quilter Kathy Barbay.
The group of women work together on quilting projects periodically on Wednesdays at the senior center. For more information or to join the group, contact Kathy Barbay at 951-805- 3278.
The Warbirds West planes y over the Towne Center during the Veterans Day Celebration. They will be participating again in this year’s celebration and will y over the Towne Center at 10:15 a.m.
Save the date for annual Veterans Day Celebration
The Veterans Day Committee would like to remind residents to save the date for the 9th annual Canyon Lake Veterans Day Celebration on Saturday, Nov. 11, in the Towne Center. The Warbirds West planes will fly over the Towne Center at 10:15. The ceremony will follow the flyover.
Bert Barbay will serve as this year’s master of ceremonies. Local resident DJ Mike Shroyer of Good Times Entertain- ment will be providing the sound system and patriotic music. The Canyon Lake Choraleers will lead the crowd in sing- ing the National Anthem and the service anthems for each military branch. As in past years, veterans of all five service branches will be encouraged to stand during the singing of their service an- thems.
Elsinore High School Flying Tiger Jr. ROTC will post the colors. Boy Scouts will be passing out the flags and pro-
grams again this year.
One rose for each Canyon Lake vet-
eran who passed away this year will be placed in the urn next to the monument along with an extra rose for the unknown veterans. A floral wreath will be placed a the monument and will remain there for a week.
Other special activities include a per- formance by the Temescal Canyon High School Drum Line and a free drawing for veterans to win a “Quilts of Valor” quilt created by the Canyon Lake Quil- ters. The POA will serve pastries and coffee prior to the ceremony. Hot dogs will be served after the ceremony com- pliments of the Canyon Lake Market and Coldwell Banker.
Those who wish to make a donation to this event should contact Mayor Pro Tem and Veterans Day Chair Vicki War- ren at vwarren@cityofcanyonlake.com.
