SPECIAL TO THE FRIDAY FLYER
When Canyon Lakers Daniel and Angel Durkee first met, they were in high school chemistry class at Temescal Canyon High School and the reaction was immediate. They started dating, but their bond would be tested as Daniel, a year older, graduated, joined the Army, and was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Angel graduated the next year and also joined the Army. The two were reunited at Fort Bragg and married in 2016.
Now, Sgt. Daniel Durkee is a
mechanic assigned to 3rd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Carson, Colorado, while Sgt. Angel Durkee is an intelligence analyst – also assigned to 10th Group; a solution made possible through the Married Army Couples Program.
Last month, the two were among fifty-three Soldiers assigned to various Special Operations units across Fort Carson to graduate from a static-line jumpmaster course hosted by 3rd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne).
For the Durkees, the course provided something more than just the title
“Jumpmaster.”
Although they work in the same unit,
they rarely interact during the day. But, being in the same Jumpmaster course was a unique treat for them.
“It’s probably been some of the best couple of weeks I’ve had in the Army, because I get to see him everyday,” Angel said.
Daniel Durkee said that pulling jumpmaster duty together was something he and Angel had talked about during the course. On the morning of the final practical work in the aircraft (PWAC) exam, they found out they’d be doing it sooner than they thought.
For their final exam, students were required to execute Jumpmaster actions inside an aircraft while flying 2,000 feet. above Barbara Drop Zone at Fort Carson. While inside of a C-130 aircraft, Jumpmaster teams will give commands simultaneously to all of the jumpers so everyone is ready.
During PWAC, the Durkees found out they would be evaluated together as one of those Jumpmaster teams.
“It definitely settled my nerves,” Daniel said. “It was nice to be able to look across and see a familiar face. It gave me a lot more confidence.”

City council appoints Randy Bonner mayor
By a vote of 3-2, the Canyon Lake City Council appointed Randy Bonner mayor during a city council meeting on June 1. At the same meeting, the council voted Vicki Warren mayor pro tem by a vote of 5-0.
The appointments come on the heels of Dawn Haggerty’s resignation during a specially-scheduled city council meeting on April 26.
Dawn resigned as mayor following an internal review of expense reports submitted by city council members. An Ad HOC Reimbursement Committee determined that there were several
mistakes in some of the reimbursements Dawn had submitted.
In light of the investigation, Dawn resigned as mayor. She did not resign as a member of the council.
Randy said, “The city council meeting on June 1 was very well attended by our citizens. The speakers were most active and respectful with their comments. We have an aggressive list of items to accomplish soon. Among them, approving the 2017-2018 budget, opening Fire Station 60 on July 1, improving/replacing the plants and trees on the Railroad Canyon Rd.
median and increasing the completion of mutual interests of POA members and Canyon Lake citizens through the monthly Roundtable meetings.
Randy, a 20-year resident of Canyon Lake, served on the Canyon Lake City Council from 2010 to 2014. He was mayor in 2014. Prior to serving on the council, Randy served on the Canyon Lake POA Board of Directors from 2008 to 2010.
The next city council meeting will be a Special Meeting on Tuesday, June 20, at 12 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.
