JUNE 2, 2017 THE FRIDAY FLYER A-3 Local amateur golfer to compete in Arnold Palmer Cup
Canyon Laker Norman Xiong is a member of the University of Oregon golf team that will be competing for Team USA in the upcoming Arnold Palmer Cup, one of the most prestigious amateur golf tournaments in the world.
The Arnold Palmer Cup is an annual Ryder Cup style tournament matching top male collegiate golfers from the United States against Europe. The event will take place from June 9 to June 11 at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
Since its inception, the Arnold Palmer Cup has become a launching pad for young rising golf professionals from around the world. The event has produced more than 100 players who have gone on to earn PGA or European Tour cards.
On Wednesday, May 31, Norman received the Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman award. This award is given to the most outstand freshman in all of Division I college golf. He was also namedthePac-12Freshmanoftheyear and is a 2017 Division I Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year semifinalist.
In 2016, Norman was a member
of the United States team that won its fifth straight Junior Ryder Cup with a 15-1/2 to 8-1/2 victory over Europe at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minnesota. Norman finished the tournament 1 up.
Norman started playing golf at the age of four at the U.S. Naval Base in Guam. His family moved to the United States to further expand his opportunities in the game of golf when Norman was six years old. Initially moving to the San Diego area, Norman and his family relocated to Canyon Lake in 2009, when Norman was just 10 years old, to further expand his golfing opportunities. In Canyon Lake, he trained with Richard Messer.
Norman joined the University of Oregon golf team after graduating early from Temescal Canyon High School. He currently ranks 11th in Golfstat scoring average (70.67).
In a previous interview with The Friday Flyer, Norman was asked to describe himself. “I’m very self aware, very kind and caring, a genuine kid who loves food and loves the game of golf.
Norman Xiong joined the University of Oregon golf team after graduating early from Temescal Canyon High School.
