Every year the Chamber begins ac- cepting nominations from residents for Community Awards in December and January. This year’s selection committee read through the nominations and con- tacted the winners this week. They are as follows:
• Jordyn Strange is Youth of the Year. This award recognizes a Canyon Lake student who has exhibited academic excellence while being involved in the community and participating in school activities.
• Donna Ritchie is Citizen of the Year. This award is for an individual who has enhanced the quality of life in Canyon Lake through outstanding community involvement.
• Shawna Bowen is Volunteer of the Year. This award is for an individual who has made a significant difference to the community through volunteerism.
• The Bassmasters Club is Organi- zation of the Year. This award is for a nonprofit organization whose programs have made a positive impact on the com- munity.
• Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant & Can- tina is the Business of the Year. This award is for a Chamber member that provides exemplary customer service and superior products while supporting
the Canyon Lake business community. These honorees will be honored at the Chamber of Commerce’s 21st annual Awards Gala on Saturday, January 28, at 6 p.m. in the Holiday Bay Room at the Lodge. The public is invited to attend. Tickets to the Gala are $45 per person and can be purchased at the Chamber of- fice in the Towne Center at 31658 Rail-
road Canyon Rd.
The Chamber invites business owners
to promote their business by contribut- ing an item for the silent auction. The contributor’s name and business name will be displayed with the item in the auction area. Funds raised from the si- lent auction allows the Chamber to pro- mote its many programs and community events held during the year.
Chamber Executive Director Alison Burrafato says, “We hope residents will take this opportunity to promote their business by contributing a product, gift basket, gift certificate, event ticket, ho- tel stay or any item of value that can be placed in our Silent Auction.”
The Canyon Lake Chamber of Com- merce is an association of businesses and individuals organized to encour- age a strong local economy and quality of life by promoting and advancing the community, civic, cultural and educa-

Donations sought for event for students with special needs
Elsinore High School is seeking do- nations for its Winter Social for students with special needs. The Winter Social will be held at the Diamond Club at Storm Stadium on Tuesday, January 31. With the help of Canyon Lake resident Nancy Coughlin, Winter Social Orga- nizer Dawn Guilders is on a mission to raise $1,000. to help cover the cost of the event.
Dawn says, “Holidays can be quite stressful for children with disabilities which can limit the family’s opportuni- ties for celebrations. Loud music, col- orful decorations and large crowds can add to the day to day struggles students already face on a regular basis. The Winter Social offers families a chance to celebrate with their children in a stress free environment. With the support staff and the help and support of the Dia- mond Club employees, students are able to celebrate in a safe, non-judgmental environment.”
Dawn says many parents have said to her that they do not go out to eat for fear of being judged by their child’s table manners or loud vocalizations, or the possibility their child may leave their table and run to someone else’s. “Our night together at the Winter Social gives families a chance to enjoy being out together and also to meet some other families too, without the anxiety they may normally feel. And we have a blast celebrating!” says Dawn.

tional development of the Canyon Lake area while providing a valuable forum for issues affecting local commerce and the general well-being of the com-
munity. For more information, contact the Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Alison Burrafato at 951-244- 6124.
The first annual Elsinore High School Winter Social was held in 2005. This holiday event was first started for the families of the special needs students at Elsinore High School. Last year, and again this year, the school extended an
invitation to the special needs students at Temescal Canyon High School. “The more the merrier!” says Dawn.
The Canyon Lake Lioness Club re- cently contributed $250 towards this event. Nancy and Dawn are trying to
raise the remaining $750 to help cover the cost of the food, entertainment and venue.
Those interested in making a dona- tion towards this event should contact Nancy Coughlin at 951-805-0543.
