Boat Parade of Lights Saturday
BY DONNA RITCHIE
EDITOR, THE FRIDAY FLYER
One of Canyon Laker’s favorite tradi- tions during the holidays is the Parade of Lights, a floatilla of decorated boats the cruise along the shores of the East Bay and Main Lake.
It’s difficult to say who has more fun during this event – the residents who decorate their boats and participate in the parade or the hundreds of people who line the parade route at the parks and waterfront home parties.
Leading the parade of boats again this year will be the iconic 60 ft. fire spit- ting “Green Dragon,” a float construct- ed many years ago by members of the Yacht Club. The “Green Dragon is a fa- vorite among parade watchers.
Santa Claus will be making two ap- pearances at the parade. His first appear- ance will be on a sky ski being pulled by Ted and Nancy Horton’s “Little Red Engine” float. Santa will make a second appearance at Holiday Harbor park at the conclusion of the parade.
The boat parade will begin at the East Port boat launch ramp at about 5 p.m. on Saturday. From there, the parade will zigzag from one side of the bay to the other as the parade proceeds towards the main causeway. From the main cause- way, the parade will proceed along the eastern shore line, around the Lodge and then down the eastern side of the main lake.
The parade will duck briefly into Big Bass Cove and then proceed to the north end of the lake. From that point the pa- rade will cruise down the western side of the lake and into Catfish Cove, then past

The Yacht Club will announce the winners and serve hot chocolate, coffee and cookies at the conclusion of the pa- rade at Holiday Harbor.
Yacht Club Commodore Bob Tem- pleton says, “Holiday Harbor is a great place to view the end of the parade and watch the winners receive their prizes for the best decorated floats in each of the various categories.”

For those who have not pre-regis- tered, it is not too late to enter and have your boat judged. Parade Chairperson Jim Lange is accepting registration forms at 30400 Harbor Circle or by email at langejh@aim.com. Registration forms should be submitted by 5 p.m. on Friday, December 9, in order for boats to be placed on the official list for judging for a possible award.
Last-minute parade entries can sign up on the day of the parade at the East Port launch ramp at 4:30 p.m. Boats that do not go through the registration pro-
cess will not be eligible for judging and prizes, but are still welcome to partici- pate. Club and group floats are encour- aged to participate.
The Yacht Club will recognize all registered boats this year with a “Dash Plate” award commemorating participa- tion in the 2016 Parade of Lights. The plate can be mounted to the dashboard of the boat.
For those who need additional mo- tivation to enter the parade, the Yacht Club would like to remind potential participants that there are cash prizes and plaques for the winning floats. The awards are as follows:
Sweepstakes: (Best Overall) $125 cash, plus plaque and perpetual trophy on display at POA office.
Commodore’s Award: (Highest score) $100 cash, plus plaque and per- petual trophy on display at the POA of- fice.
Best Pontoon: $100 1st, $50 2nd, $25 3rd
Best Ski: $100 1st, $50 2nd, $25 3rd Club/Civic: $100 1st, $50 2nd, $25 3rd A spokesperson for the Yacht Club
says, “Remember that your boat does not need to be the fancy-looking float that you see in the Rose Parade. It just needs to be decorated with lights.
If you’ve ever been to any of the boat parades in Newport Beach, you know that many of the boats are just decorated with lights and are not trying to have a theme. The same applies to our parade. Just decorate your boat with lights and join in the fun of the evening.” Parade information and entry forms can be found on the Yacht Club’s website at www.clyc2014.webs.com.
