Paddle or pedal through East Bay tomorrow
It’s time to beat the (hopefully) last heatwave of summer! Throw on a swimsuit, take a jump in the lake, then join the paddlers and pedalers who are gathering for the 4th annual Paddle & Pedal Regatta tomorrow, August 29, starting at 10 a.m. at Indian Beach.
Everyone with a paddle board, kayak, canoe or ped- al boat is invited to join the non-motorized cruise of the
East Bay. A limited number of rental and demo boards will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Young children are encouraged to ride along as long as they are wearing life vests. And dogs are welcome as long as they don’t go in the lake or hang out at Indian Beach before or afterward. (There are four parks in Can- yon Lake where dogs are allowed on leashes, but Indian
Beach isn’t one of them.) Stick around after the cruise for the Fitness and Triathlon Club-sponsored burger bar- becue, which will be available to those who donate $5 per person. There also will be a drawing for prizes do- nated by event sponsors. Participants are encouraged to bring a side dish to share. Barbecue proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
Young ladies hope to be community ambassadors
A new queen will be crowned at to- morrow's Miss Canyon Lake Scholar- ship Pageant at the Lodge, but don't expect the typical look of surprise and hand-over-mouth response. Kymberli Conn, a 22-year-old who recently got engaged, already knows she will reign as Miss Canyon Lake, since two of her peers dropped out of the competition.
Nevertheless, Kymberli will be as thrilled as the younger girls to step into the spotlight in the formal gown and makeup of a pageant queen – not just for the glamor but also as a mentor to the younger contestants and as a role model for volunteerism, community in- volvement and making a difference in the world through her chosen field of nursing.
Now in her fourth year of nursing school, Kymberli will be graduating in 2016. She lives in Canyon Lake with her mom and attends college locally. Her fa- ther passed away last November and her fiancé is in the military.
The platform she plans to promote is "Helping Haiti." She recently volun- teered as a nurse in that impoverished nation and says it touched her heart deeply. Pageant Director CoCo Morri-
son says, "Kymberli is excited about her journey ahead and is eager to represent Canyon Lake and mentor the younger girls. She is a great role model and well liked by her peers."
CoCo adds, "We changed things up a bit this year with the focus being Miss Canyon Lake mentoring the younger girls by teaching them volunteerism, and pride and commitment within the com- munity where they live."
Residents are encouraged to come out for the pageant in support of Kymberli and all the young women who hope to be a part of the Royal Court and Talent Court. The theme will be "The Sixties," and the pageant will include evening gowns, fun fashion and interviews.
Both pageant events are tomorrow, August 29, at the Lodge. Tickets will be sold at the door. The optional talent competition begins at 10 a.m.; tickets are $10. The pageant begins at 7 p.m.; tickets are $12.
Assistant Director Janelle Basham
says, “These young contestants are look-
ing forward to helping out in the com-
munity which they love and it will be a
joy to have them as ambassadors of the
City.” Kymberli Conn, 22, will reign as the new Miss Canyon Lake.
