MARCH 6, 2015 THE FRIDAY FLYER A-5 Enjoy ’40s-themed dinner-dance at the Lodge
It's been a beautiful winter but spring is in the air, the days are longer and Can- yon Lakers are invited to celebrate with the big band sounds and swing danc- ing at "Salute to the Troops USO Din- ner-Dance" on Friday, March 13, at the Lodge. Hosted by the Travel Club, every- one is invited to this 1940s-themed event.
Organizer Lyne Hall would like to re- mind everyone that the featured band is the highly acclaimed Temescal Canyon High School Jazz Band, which has been diligently practicing its Big Band sound. Supporting this event is an effective way to support the music program at the high school, Lyne says.
A number of Canyon Lake students are involved with the music program. In addition to the Jazz Band, there are breakout combos, a drum line, a 40-piece concert band and a 60-member march- ing band. The marching band's major- ette is four-time world champion baton twirler Rebecca Lantz, who has led the
Rose Parade for the past two years.
The Jazz Band, directed by Michael Donohue, was very well received by at- tendees at the Swinging Sixties Fashion Show pre-party at Lyne Hall's home last week. It was there to help promote the Travel Club dinner-dance. The band also plays each year at Cotillion's annual hol-
iday dinner-dance.
According to Lyne, 100 percent of
the money the band makes in donations goes towards instrument repair and re- furbishment, uniform repair and clean- ing, musical arrangements, competition entry fees, busing, etc.
Tickets to the dinner-dance are avail- able through the Travel Club website at canyonlaketravelclub.org. Tickets are $45 for members and $50 for non-mem- bers. Reservations are due by Sunday, March 8.
"If you've ever wanted to live (or re- live) the nostalgia of the Big Band era, this is your chance," says Lyne.
Gary Bonner Singers to give matinee concert
The Fine Arts Guild is pleased to present “The Best of Broadway and the Movies” performed by The Gary Bon- ner Singers when they return to Canyon Lake with a matinee performance at the Lodge on Sunday, March 15, at 2:30 p.m.
This group of performers, under the direction of Dr. Gary Bonner, is known as one of the best choral groups in the nation and has been invited to sing at the White House four times in the last eight years. Fortunately for Canyon Lake fans, the choral group is based here in Southern California.
The Singers will perform hits famil- iar to all, with songs from “The Sound of Music,” “Phantom of the Opera,” ”Oklahoma,” and many more, conclud- ing with a spectacular “Les Miserables” finale.
The Gary Bonner Singers’ “Best of Broadway and the Movies” concert two years ago was a sellout, so get tickets early. Tickets are on sale at the CLPOA office at $20 per person (check only), and are available online from brownpa- pertickets.com or by calling 1-800-838- 3006. There are no fees for online credit card or telephone purchase.
