in remission.
After the prognosis, the couple went
to the City of Hope for a second opin- ion and the hope of getting a bone mar- row transplant. But the City of Hope turned them down, saying Dorothy still had too many good blood cells in her bone marrow and, besides, she would not be a good candidate because of her age. So she went back to Kaiser and started on a regimen of chemotherapy and prayer.
Always a close family, the Cable’s children moved quickly to their parents’ side. Their younger son Jeff and and his wife Becky moved to the area, and their older son Mark and his wife Jill imme- diately returned home from the mission field in Romania. They continue to live with Ken and Dorothy at this time.
Dorothy says one of the most impor- tant things she learned in nursing was that attitude makes a difference. Even though he knows her condition to be terminal, her doctor is calling her his “best patient.” She continues to receive regular sessions of chemotherapy but says she also believes in the power of prayer.
For this interview, Dorothy admits to being sad. But she doesn’t want her sto- ry to be sad. She and Ken are very grate- ful for the support of family and friends. Talking about the wonderful life they’ve shared makes them happy. All roads do come to an end – but then, for the Ca- bles, it’s always been about the journey, not the destination.
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.”
-- Robert Frost
Thinking “chronic leukemia” would be controllable, Ken and Dorothy were concerned but not alarmed. It wasn’t until they saw Dorothy's doctor here at Kaiser that the bottom dropped out of their world. After more testing, the doctor told them Dorothy had acute myeloid leukemia and gave her six weeks to three or four months to live.
Ken and Dorothy have a close-knit family. They are pictured with sons and daughters-in-law Mark and Jill and Jeff and Becky, and grandsons Daniel, Kenny and Zachary, all in college.
