Canyon Lake resident Josh Steeber organized an Ugly Sweater Golf Cart Poker Run on Dec. 1 to help raise money for charity. With more than 35 golf carts participating, the event raised nearly $1,500.

Originally, the proceeds were going to be split among five charities but at the last minute, the group decided to give all the proceeds to the Canyon Lake Family Matters Club’s Winter Carnival to benefit the children of Canyon Lake.

The event was founded by Amber and Chris Vorhies, who ran it with the help of their family members for the past seven years. When Amber and Chris moved to Riverside last year, Josh volunteered to take over the event to keep the tradition going.

Participants paid $10 per hand to participate. The entry fee included food and drinks on each stop. Josh hosted the first stop and treated participants to bacon and pancakes on a stick. Grace Hudson hosted the second stop and treated participants to egg and chorizo burritos.

Participants enjoyed a variety of soups on the third stop at the home of Brandy and Ken Newman and an assortment of desserts and pastries on the fourth stop at the home of Shannon Deeter and Jeff Grant. The final stop was at the lodge where players revealed their hands and winners were determined.

Josh would like to thank all those who hosted, participated and helped to make this event a success this year. “I’m looking forward to doing it again next year,” said Josh.
