Letters: Setting the record straight

Editor, The Friday Flyer

I understand that there are a number of misstatements being circulated on various Facebook pages about my comments on dredging and alum. To clarify what I said, the dredging and alum are merely band aids.

We need a capital project that truly addresses sludge removal and can help circulate the lake to prevent water quality incidents. Since 1998, our lake has been classified as an “impaired waterway” (sawpa.org/canyon-lake) and besides monitoring, nothing to address the issue in the long term has been done. Dredging and alum applications have not changed our classification.

Water is a complex issue and it takes years to get up to speed. It is going to take knowledgeable and skilled leaders to make a difference. I have the education, experience and relationships to make a difference for our community just as I have for water systems and communities across the state.

Having worked for Metropolitan and a Metropolitan member agency, I have not been able to share my thoughts as it was considered a conflict of interest. I now run my own company and have the ability to voice my concerns and share my expertise. I am hosting a meet and greet at The Cup Above on Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 7 to 8:30 a.m. and one at the Sports Stop that evening from 5 to 6 p.m.

Please visit burkeforwater.com to learn more about my background and see a list of my endorsements that include the Riverside Republican Central Committee, California Water Commissioner Joe Del Bosque, Riverside County Supervisor Chuck Washington, RWQCB Vice Chairwomen and Metropolitan Vice Chair Linda Ackerman as well as over 40 others from across the state and locally. Remember to vote on Nov. 6 and thank you again for your thoughtful consideration.
