Kids reel in the fun at annual Fishing Derby

The fish were biting for the Bassmasters Club 32nd annual Kids Fishing Derby. More than 150 young anglers ages five to 15 headed to the lake with their fishing poles on Saturday to reel in fish for trophies and prizes.

Every child who registered went home with a prize and was entered into a special drawing for a chance to win one of four bicycles. The lucky winners of the bicycles are Ashlyn DeVere, Jamie Lough, Josh Escobar and Devin Shisbey.

Kat Sidwell and Teresa Fleck each won an Aqua Lily Pad in the opportunity drawing.

After the fish weigh-in, the Bassmasters Club treated all participants and their families with complimentary hot dogs, drinks and snow cones.

Trophies were awarded in four different age groups: five to seven, eight to 11 and 12 to 15. Trophies also were awarded for “Big Fish” in each species and “Big Fish” to one girl and one boy for overall fish weight. The winners are as follows:

Big Fish winners:

Total fish weight (girl): Sailor Denten, 19.22 lbs.

Total fish weight (boy): Aidan Moreno, 19.46 lbs.

Bluegill: Evan Devre, .45 lbs.

Crappie: Joey French, 1.30 lbs.

Catfish: Aiden Rodriquez, 7.06 lbs.

Overall winners five to seven age group:

  • 1st place: Parker Hildebrand, 19.42 lbs.
  • 2nd place: Christine Boyd, 1.36 lbs
  • 3rd place: Ethan Beardsley, 1 lb.

Overall winners eight to 11 age group:

  • 1st place: Andy McRae, 6.60 lbs.
  • 2nd place: Jeffrey Eads, 6.38 lbs.
  • 3rd place: Noah Linninger, 6.12 lbs.

Overall winners 12 to 15 age group:

  • 1st place: Kylee Moreno, 18.22 lbs.
  • 2nd place: Jenna Lane, 14.68 lbs.
  • 3rd place: Maverick Grant, 13 lbs.
  • Fourth place: Heath Lewis, 7.70 lbs.

Parker Hildebrand landed a whopper carp weighing 15.98 pounds.

Professional bass fisherman and 2013 WON Bass U.S. Open winner Rusty Brown and his wife Andrea made a special appearance and donated a prize. “We really enjoyed the event and look forward to doing it again next year,” said Rusty.

The Bassmasters Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Magnolia Room at the country club. The club welcomes residents who like to fish and want to improve their skills in a low stress, friendly competitive environment.

The Bassmasters Club holds monthly tournaments on the first Saturday after the first Wednesday of the month. The next tournament will be held Oct. 6 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
