CL golfers celebrate 10th Pismo Golf Getaway

Canyon Lake golfers celebrated the 10th annual Pismo Golf Getaway to Pismo Beach Aug. 19 through Aug. 22. They have been staying at the Oxford Suites Hotel and playing at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course since 2009.

The event started when Joe Kamashian and the late Fran Pothier decided to plan a golf outing to get away from the hot August days in Canyon Lake. It has continued to be a popular event every year since, drawing between 80 to more than 100 Canyon Lakers annually. This year, 91 guests escaped the Canyon Lake heat to Pismo Beach where they experienced morning drizzles and highs in the mid-70s.

The group arrived on Sunday and gathered in the hotel patio in the late afternoon where Canyon Laker Anne Norris provided a welcome reception. On Monday evening, in the newly renovated bar, the sales manager at Oxford Suites welcomed the group with a presentation recognizing Joe Kamashian and the group for a 10-year relationship with the hotel. Oxford Suites provided complimentary drinks in the evenings and a breakfast each morning.

Two days of challenging golf were played at Cypress Ridge Golf Course with a putting contest on Monday afternoon. “The golf course is always in great condition and the staff does a great job tending to the needs of the Canyon Lake golfers,” said Travis Montgomery.

During the awards banquet on Tuesday evening at the Cypress Ridge Pavilion, the sales manager made a presentation thanking Joe and the group for 10 years of support for both the golf course and the restaurant.

The hotel and golf course were not the only ones recognizing the 10th anniversary of the Pismo Golf Getaway. Those in attendance presented Joe and Linda Kamashian with a getaway of their own to the Rancho Bernardo Inn as a thank you for organizing the Pismo Golf Getaway for the past 10 years. And not to be left out, the mayor of Pismo Beach signed a proclamation expressing the city’s appreciation for ten years of visits to the area, representing over a quarter of a million dollars of financial impact and thanking Joe and the group. Travis Montgomery, president of the Canyon Lake Men’s Golf Club, presented the proclamation on behalf of Mayor Ed Waage.

The final awards and recognitions of the evening were to those who excelled at golf for two days. The winners are as follows:

Ladies 1st place winners: A Flight: KK Beecher;  B Flight: Marlene Cathro; C Flight: Sandy Coleman.

Men’s 1st place winners: A Flight: Bobby Gunter; B Flight: Gil Kim; C Flight: Randy Schutz.
