Near and Far: Canyon Lakers celebrate anniversary in Iceland

Canyon Lakers Mavis and Randy Schutz celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Iceland. It’s a destination the couple had on their bucket list.

Mavis and Randy spent 10 days completely circling the island/country on a tour called, “Iceland: The Golden Circle and Ring Road.” “We were amazed to see some of the Earth’s most astounding and extreme landscapes, as well as extreme weather changes on an hourly basis,” said Mavis. “We learned about the country, originally inhabited by the Vikings in the year 700 and its growth over the centuries. Iceland has a fascinating maritime history and a culture of the tow original ruling countries, Norway and Denmark, becoming a republic in 1944.

The couple visited seven different regions during their 10-day trip. “The highlights of our trip included visiting the Fridheimar Farm, where tomatoes were grown fresh in a huge greenhouse heated by geothermal energy; a cruise through the Jokulsarlon Glacier, seeing beautiful glaciers and blue water; the Godafoss waterfall, where the citizens gave up paganism in the year 1,000; the Herring Era Museum;  the Bjarnarhofn Shark Museum and the Blue Lagoon Spa,” said Mavis.

Randy said he was happy they made the trip but the weather was extremely unpredictable. “There was wind, rain, snow and hail all in the same hour, then the sky would clear and it would repeat.”
