The circus is coming to Miss Ginny’s Story Time on Friday, May 18, at 11:30 a.m. The circus-themed program will also include a fun craft with all materials provided. This will be the last story time until August.

Toddler Story Time and the Adult Book Club will continue through the summer. Play Day, Miss Ginny’s Story Time and the Junior Book Club will break during the summer. The programs will return in August or September.

The Roots to Grow Tutoring is moving to Saturdays only.  Demand for the program has dropped off as school comes to an end for this year.

June 4 is the first day for logging reading in the 2018 summer reading program “Reading Takes You Everywhere.” This year, the program will go back to using the amount of time reading as the gage for awards.  In 2017, the online program required the measure be books read.  Librarian Sandra Brautigam stated parents observed their children were reading smaller less challenging books to complete the numbers.  This was a major factor in returning to the time reading reward concept.

“The time reading measure is also more supportive for struggling readers. These children can gain the most from the benefits of reading through the summer.  Reading books they choose takes reading from school work to fun,” said Sandra. “In the process of reading for fun, they increase their skills through practice. Studies have shown children who participate in summer reading programs are more school ready and do better in mathematics than children who have not. Reading for pleasure also stays with children who later become life-long learner adults.”

Awards for time reading will begin Monday, June 18. The grand prize drawing will be held on Friday, July 27. Prizes include bicycles and a promise of two one-day passes to Disneyland. The basic program has four levels. To encourage reading after the program time has been completed, children then earn extra reading tickets which apply to the larger prizes in three opportunity drawings.
